The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

The Slow Music Movement Radio Show #39

Welcome to the latest Slow Music Movement radio show which is also broadcast on the excellent Music For Dreams radio station. Ska, deconstructed & reassembled beyond all recognition starts the show but soon gives way to a guitar masterclass - both straight up playing and the more ambient and experimental variety, culminating in some good old West Coast acid folk rock. Things then take an electronic turn before heading into more Balearic, soulful, house and African territory for the second half.

Yannick Franck presents Mt. Gemini - Long Shot Kick The Bucket (Sub Rosa)
M. Grig - Call (12K promo)
Adam Coney - The Sun Rattle (Trestle)
Burn Paw - Arthur's Seat (Bandcamp)
Death & Vanilla - A Flaw in the Iris (Fire)
Al Manfredi - Empty of your Possession (Now Again)
Ulla Straus - Sister (Quiet Time)
Cleptophonic - JZz65 (Pregnant Void)
Payfone - A Prayer for Maya Angelou (Otis)
African Vibration - Hinde (Soundway)
Alma Negra - Tany Be, Michal Turtle rmx (Self Release)
RAS - 4:20, radio edit (Average Negative)
Bantam Lions - Can We Come Together, original (Bandcamp)

Don't forget our daily social media recommendations. No information overload, one recommendation a day, only the good stuff.

Slow Music Recommendations round up - 27/4/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Sora - Re.Sort (MItsuko/Svetlana/wrwtfww)

Rhythmically stuttering and sonically spluttering but with that peculiar Japanese melodic easy listenability this reminder of Sora's forgotten modern gem distributed by Wrwtfww Records is a pleasingly unhinged chilled charmer.

Alfa Mist - Structuralism (Bandcamp)

Mixing old school hip hop with laid back jazz is
Alfa Mist's raison d'etre rather than an experiment and probably why he does it so well. Check out his brain nourishing as well as head nodding new LP.

Elkhorn - Sun Cycle/Elk Jam (Feeding Tube)

"Two mind-bending slabs of acoustic and electric guitars, wandering into corners of acid-logic". More great turned on & tuned in psychedelic folk rock, this time from Elkhorn on Feeding Tube Records

Beluga Stone & Master Stone - Spiritual Surfing (UknowMe)

Swirling in a lighter shade of purple haze & rooted with a rhythmic hip hop anchor the future soul & psychedelic leaning guitar led electonic haziness of Poland's Beluga Trigga (P.Unity) & Master Stone for U Know Me Records is a great late night listen.

Malk - Wmaidit (Lost Tribe Sound)

Peculiarity & listenability don't always go hand in hand but MALK, armed only with his musical third eye, a heap of Scottish field recordings, some strings, esoteric wind instruments & a toy keyboard has produced one of the most singular albums of 2019 for Lost Tribe Sound. I strongly urge you to check this out.

Wai Wai Music Resort - WWMR 1 (Local Visions)

Sun roof down, oversized shades on, one hand on the wheel the other holding a fruit cocktail & cruise into the week with this easy listening EP of soulful Japanese smooth grooves from Wai Wai Music Resort for Local visions.

Floating Points - Late night tales (Late Night Tales)

I don't listen to many mix CDs these days but when they consistently vibe like this lovingly segued, heartfelt selection of smokey soul, laid back jazz fusions and modern electronic midnight hour mood setters from Floating Points for Late Night Tales then I'm all in.

Slow Music Recommendations Round up - 20/4/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Centrum - För Meditation (Rocket Recordings)

Transcend the near dystopian future, climate breakdown & Easter traffic jams by setting the sat nav to inner peace & the sound of 60's optimism with Sweden's Centrum & their Eastern drone enriched, transcendental, psychedelic folk rock for Rocket Recordings

Biodive - 40 Now (Church Recordings)

Feelgood Friday vibes with this 4 track EP of dreamy electronica. The most liquid of drum and bass, new age of New Age breaks, old school arm raising piano line euphoria & an after party come down classic to round off all that excitement from Biodive for Church

Future Museums - Tea Service (Proceeds to The Lilith Fund)

Texan Neil Lord and his Future Museums project are on a roll this year with another great release of outer spacial synth work and consciousness expanding ambience this time for the, surprisingly still necessary cause - The Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equity.

Burnt Paw - Lunar Vortex Incantations (Bandcamp)

Fine fingerpicked, Celtic myth rooted, acoustic guitar conveyed, animism reviving folk with transtlantic echoes & a distant Eastern gaze from Edinburgh's Burnt Paw on this well priced self release if supporting great, truly independent music is your thing

Bantam Lions - Can We Come Together (Bandcamp)

Check out this pure of heart, flashback inducing house music EP bringing a tear to this old raver's eyes - uplifting, unifying, life affirming, smile inducing, emotional dance music that should be the end of night tune for every outdoor festival this year from
Bantam Lions. Spread the love.

Brenda Ray - Naffi years 1979-1983 (Em Records)

Bowl into the week with the oddly pricey, but nevertheless maverick & masterful, good old days sounds of Brenda Ray+crew & their adventures in lofi, pop sprinkled, post punk attitude & funk injected early digi dub fusions, recorded to 4 track cassette.

Ciro Berenguer - El Mar De Junio (Eilean Records)

Sunday listening sorted as Ciro Berenguer Music's manipulated string notes, field recordings and bowed psaltery (look it up, I had to!) condense into wispy electro acoustic ambient clouds on a hot day before delighting & refreshing with their light sonic shower. Praise also to weather gods Eilean Rec.

Slow Music Recommendations round up - 13/4/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Anna Homler - Deliquium in C (Praesens Editionen)

Weird up your Saturday in an oddly comforting way with the experimental adventures in parallel dimensional pop & surreal ambient soundscapes of Anna Homler, her meaningful made up language & a crack team of fellow boundary nudgers for Präsens Editionen.

Rejoicer - Heavy Smoke EP (Stones Throw)

The new Rejoicer EP for Stones Throw Records is a feel good, head nodding nugget as he injects his funk licked beats with a 60/70's psychedelic meets cosmic future soul vibe to produce some of this year's most cultured beats.

Merry Airbrakes (Scissor Tail)

I tend to keep my eyes on the road but every now and then it's worth looking in the rear view mirror, especially when a reissue is this full of blues soaked, psychedelic folk rocking goodness with messages that still resonate. More great work from Scissor Tail Records.

Various Artists - Malam Minggu (Akuphone)

Despite slowly improving awareness, the English speaking music world has, & still does, largely overlook the music of Asia which when it sounds as good as this vintage Indonesian jaipong, gamelan & late 70s/early 80s pop music from Western Java is a damn shame. Thanks to Akuphone for shining the light.

Loopline - Subterranean (Hazukashi Records)

Deeply atmospheric, dubbed out and plugged in, global jazz voyage from Loopline on Japanese label to keep an eye on
Hazukashi Records.

Good Weather for an Airstrike - Zones (Bandcamp)

It's Good Weather For An Airstrike and his gentle drones are currently patrolling the skies launching multiple ambient strikes against the centres of capitalism in a last ditch attempt to make the world more caring and sustainable.

Various Artists - Music For Brainwaves (Erased Tapes)

Scientifically proven Sunday listening as Michael Price, Högni, Ben Lukas Boysen & the neuroscientists at Goldsmiths combine research & musical ability to birth some wonderful ambient, drone & modern compositional music based around frequencies & oscillations that aid concentration, alleviate stress and promote sleep for Erased Tapes.

Slow Music Recommendations Round Up - 6/4/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

GUTS - PHILANTROPIQUES (HEAVENLY SWEETNESS)

Without a bad bone in its body the new GUTS album for Heavenly Sweetness is a soulful, feel good, hip mobilizing, pan tropical delight full of Afro Latin Caribe sunshine.

Rozi Plain - What a Boost (Memphis Industries)

What a great new album from
Rozi Plain as she leads her crack collaborators from the vocal, synth & guitar front into reimagining acid folk, with the most cultured of indie pop twists, for the instagram rather than the inner peace generation. A really beautifully produced, nuanced return for Memphis Industries.

Simon James - Cosmic Surgery (Spun Out Of Control)

The prophetic work, albeit only currently in 2D, of Alma Haser gets an atmospheric soundtrack from one man & his machines Simon James(The Simonsound) with this stylistically decade spanning synth escapade encompassing cinematic, synthwave, ambient, uptempo & noir realms for Spun Out of Control.

Chris Cohen (Captured Tracks)

Rooted in the classic singer songwriters - cemented by it's suspicion arousing portrait cover but fortunately minus the overtly cheesy arrangements, stylistically swirling with soft rock, Americana, folk pop moments & coupled with repeat listen depth appeal the new
Chris Cohen LP for Captured Tracks is well worth your time.

Dexter Story - Bahir (Soundway)

Always nice to hear something new from Dexter Story & his further, LA base camp rooted, adventures through the Arab facing Horn of Africa's diverse musical world for Soundway Records is a feelgood global fusion feast and an East African light shining joy.

Shafiq Husayn - The Loop (Eglo Records)

Aided by Eglo Records and transporting more A list guests than a royal wedding, the ever inventive soul shapeshifter Shafiq Husayn tops up the mother ship with a full tank of jazz, funk, hip hop, electronic vibes & continues hurtling through his parallel psychedelic cosmic souliverse in serious style.

Marty Hicks - Olreilion (Bullflat3.8)

Sunday sorted with the new
Marty Hicks LP as he caresses a soothing blanket of gentle tape hiss, faint drones & becalmed synthwork with the gentlest of piano phrases to pacifying ambient effect.

So the latest show for Radio Primavera Sound is now available to stream.
