The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Recommendations Round up - 22/12/2018

A quick RSS feed friendly round up of this weeks daily recommendations if you don't want to follow our social media every day.

Kokoko! - Liboso (Transgressive)

Get your Friday freak on with the latest EP for Transgressive from the hottest Afro fusion sounds around - the Congolese concocted, rowdy electronic, post punk, sound distorting, body contorting, DIY lo-fi, high energy sounds of KOKOKO! Be sure to check them live if you get a chance they kick arse.

various Artists - Escape from Synth City (Cabinet of Curiosities)

Late to the party but undoubtedly one of the LPs of 2018 is the Numero Group sub-label Cabinet of Curiosities' soul saturated Escape from Synth City compilation of obscure, lo-fi, emotion rich, wobbly, 80's grooving electronic visions of the future.

Dravier - Spirit Channels (Not Not Fun)

If Krautrock had been invented by a bunch of crystal waving, tropically located, Ashram encamped hippies it might be called Coconutrock & sound more like this sprawling new age of New Age, rhythmically propelled, tape hissing, nature sampling, ambient odyssey by JUNGLE GYM RECORDS' driving force Dravier for Not Not Fun Records.

MJ Lallo - Take Me With You (Seance Centre)

Beautiful, experimental, abstract soul explorations of the subconscious Innerverse powered only by a drum machine, synth, Yamaha SPX90 effects unit & a remarkable set of versatile, cosmically inclined, vocal chords from MJ Lallo for Séance Centre.

Wanderwelle - Gathering of the Ancient Spirits (Silent Season)

Troubled by modern living & its money gods & armed only with an ambient agenda & a recording studio, Wanderwelle go in search of ancient lore, unspoilt lands & simpler animistic beliefs with this percussive, electronic, Pachamama sampling, musical incantation for Silent Season

Caleb R.K. Williams - Roadtrip Work Songs (Eagle Stone)

The broken Americana and fragile folk guitar icing the ambling ambient atmospheres and field recordings of nature and life from Caleb R.K. Williams road trip around Europe for The Eagle Stone Collective is hitting the Sunday sweet spot today.

Recommendations Round Up - 15/12/2018

A quick RSS feed friendly round up of this weeks daily recommendations if you don't want to follow our social media every day.

Ot to, not to - Goshen (Other People)

Alerted by the prospect of new material in 2019 from ot to, not to can I suggest you put a weird spectral soul wobble into your Saturday with the pretty experimental but very listenable sounds of their previous LP on Other People

Maylee - Mutual Attraction (Bandcamp)

Put some old fashioned lovers soul into your weekend as Maylee Todd comes through with two great slices of 00's polished 80's soul vibes to great effect on this Bandcamp exclusive.

Daniel Caleb - Semblance

Enter the machine generated soundtrack of a computer game & feel strangely alive as Daniel Caleb adds percussion, atmosphere, emotional depth & throws in a ticket to an electronic sci-fi future which hints at humanity's building blocks for good measure

Santpoort - Cloudstreet

More sunshine soaked acoustic electronica today as Santpoort (Julien Mier ) reminisces about southern hemisphere island life and provides an all too short soulful beat tape of all too short melodic beats/travel vignettes. Makes me feel all warm inside.

ATLAS.exe - Tropical Midi Selections (New World)

Hear the tropical waves lapping around your desk, feel sunny chillwave vibes warming your pale winter skin & bask in some schmaltzy, vapourwave friendly, Kenny G sax for good measure from New Zealands's ATLAS.exe for New World Records.

Steve Spacek - Natural Sci-Fi (eglo)

One day all soul music will sound like this. Check out the body contorting future beats, weighty but warm bass and distinctive voice of Steve Spacek on his new album for the ever interesting Eglo records.

Sébastien Wright - Soft Geometry

Serenity through ambient music & perfect Sunday listening as the minimal keys, politely intruding field recordings & fragile gently rippling drones courtesy of Sebastién Wright  help suspend reality & make the world a better place

Recommendations Round up - 8/12/2018

A quick RSS feed friendly round up of this weeks daily recommendations if you don't want to follow our social media every day.

Sosena Gere Eyesus (Little Axe)

Ear & mind opening recordings from Sosena Gebre Eyesus playing the otherworldly begena or harp of David whilst gently singing Ethiopian orthodox hymns for
Little Axe. Enchanting & mesmerising traditional East African music.

Ben Penn - Very Important EP (Safe Trip)

Anchored with a jazz funk vibe but reaching for the techno future stars, get your Friday brain wobble on & warm up for the weekend with the electronic fusion vibes of
Ben Penn on Young Marco's aptly named Safe Trip label.

Smalltown Supersound 25: The Movement of the Free Spirit by Prins Thomas (Smalltown Supersound)

A DJ mix is like cooking, you need great source material & after 25 years
Smalltown Supersound has some of the best ingredients in the game. Luckily Prins Thomas is the chef & he's cooked up the best DJ mix of 2018 over 220 minutes & 80 tracks. Michelin stars all round & a BIG happy 25th birthday to the label.

Lucky Brown & The S.G.'s - Mesquite Suite (Tramp Records)

Most modern funk is a pale imitation but Washington's
LUCKY BROWN BAND is carving out out his own 21st century fresh funk fusion. Check out his all inclusive, barrio rather than barrier, soul stirring LP on the always excellent Tramp Rec.

Anelis Assumpcao - Taurina (Scubidu Music)

Another stunning avant pop LP out of Brazil from Anelis Assumpção for Scubidu Music. Leftfield percussion, oddball arrangements, sweet vocals with attitude, elements of dub, MPB, jazz, electronica & Brazil's Afro heritage expertly fused into one big fusion Feijoada.

Same Waves - Algorithm of Desire (Flau)

Serene yet anchored by lyrical weight the new LP by Same Waves for Japan's flau is an intriguing, stylistically fluctuating, electronic acoustic fusion with surreal jazz, Americana & modern compositional cameos from crack Chicago musicians popping up in its vocal pop dreaminess.

Lisa/Liza - Momentary Glance (Orindale)

Stretched almost to breaking point, the fragile folk & hazy Americana sounds of Portland's Lisa/Liza for Orindal Records have an underlying strength and an undeniable beauty.

Yoruba Singers - Fighting for Survival (Cultures of Soul)

One for the Friday funksters as this politically & socially charged, Afro soul, funk, Caribbean & jazz fused musical gem by the Yoruba Singers gets a welcome reissue by the nice people at
Cultures of Soul. No bad tunes, just drop the needle and follow your hips.

If Music presents World Jazz Grooves (BBE Music)

If you only buy one jazz compilation this year then make it World Jazz Grooves on
BBE Music compiled by diligent, dust defying, dapper, deep digging dons If Music's JC & Victor Kiswell.

Moulay Ahmed El Hassani - Atlas Electric (Hive Mind)

Another fantastic LP from Hive Mind Records as they present a taste of Morocco's Moulay Ahmed El Hassani's self released & self played material. Synths & drum machines meet native instruments on this open minded mid-Atlas folk meets Rai & Chaabi, electronic fusion. A wonderful listen.

Post Moves - Unison of Motion (Lobby Art)

A vaguely disquieting but not troubling air mingles with the ambient ether and cosmic intent of Portland's Post Moves as he fuses his pedal steel guitar, effects, field recordings & synths to fine effect for Lobby Art

Hour - Anemone Red (Lily Tapes & Discs)

It's nice to see my favourite mattress friendly, instrumental folksters from Philadelphia,
Hour, back so soon with a new release for Lily Tapes & Discs. A languid lament and a fine lazy, hazy contemplative start to the week.
