The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Recommendations Round up - 26/1/2019

Our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's recommendations just in case you don't want to follow us daily on social media.

Christoph El' Truento - Peace Maker Dub (Bandcamp)

Rounding off a fine week for modern dub mutations is Christoph El Truento & his great new album of Nyabinghi drum nourished, horn and flute enriched, guitar licked roots and cultured beats.

Auf Togo meets Becker & Mukai (SAS Recordings)

Get your Friday freak on with this chugging, bugging, raver hugging, toad licking, space rocking, psyched & electronically diced, slice of dubbed out disco from Auf Togo & Becker & Muckai for SaS Recordings.

Kassa Overall - Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz (Self Release)

Despite being the most natural of bedfellows, genuinely great hip hop & jazz fusion LP's are still relatively few and far between so I'm happy to report that New York drummer, producer & rapper Kassa Overall & some stellar guests have given the genre a fresh sounding boost.

Odd Ned - Potboiler No. 2 (Wheretimegoes)

It's been a good week for idiosyncratic dub deviance. Check out this Bandcamp only journey through digi dub, dub techno, JA injected ambient and whimsical lo-fi, echo saturated electronica by Odd Ned for Dublin's wherethetimegoes.

LeonxLeon - Rokanbo (Cracki Records)

A taste of summer is here to see you through the darker days as LeonxLeon's Balearic infused, Zouk tickled, disco nodding, feel good house vibes for Cracki Records deliver 5 reasons to smile and dance for the vitamin D deficient.

Lo Kindre - Chlorophytum (12th Isle)

Unfortunately the Bandcamp embed function for this release seems to be disabled so head to this link but there is our review:

Nice to see 12th Isle back in style with a heavyweight slab of psychedelic synthesized digi dub from fellow Glasgow tripper Lo Kindre that is more attuned to late night deep diving than weekend raving.

Jon Neher & Michael Scott Dawson - Nothing is on Fire (Fenwood Rail)

I don't know why but I soften to darker, classical leaning soundtracks on a Sunday & the sombre yet soothing, piano led acoustics, interwoven with subtle field recordings, occasional tape quiver and ambient electronics of Jon Neher & Michael Scott Dawson on Fenwood Rail is sounding great this morning.

Music Recommendations - 19/1/2019

Our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's recommendations just in case you don't want to follow us daily on social media.

Avocet - Borrowed Seed (Mink Records)

The soothing yet substantial, beautifully balanced, folk trio sound of Avocet's debut EP for Mink Records are hitting the sweet spot today - microdosed psychedelia, hints of jazz, beautiful vocals & a subtle Celtic thread in perfect folkloric fusion harmony. Make sure you dig out their recent singles as well.

Dim Grimm - Gamut Sap (Bandcamp Self Release)

Rising from the Dimlite ashes, Dim Grimm reminds us why he was always ahead of the beat making curve with this painstakingly sculpted, emotionally layered, experience recounting, psycho-sonic analysed, electro-acoustic biography.

WildBadger - The End is a Beginning (Bandcamp Self Release)

Culling cliches, multi-disciplinary artist & one man band, WildBadger is putting the new back into nu-jazz in fine style. Check out the sax infused, hypnotic percussion, dub deviance & general genre & electronic fusion sounds of his great new EP.

Dhafer Youssef - Sounds of MIrrors (Anteprima/Bendo)

Travel without moving with the spiritual, nomadic yet unifying, harmonious sounds of Tunisia's Dhafer Youssef, Turkey's Hüsnü Şenlendirici & India's Zakir Hussain on one of my favourite world music LPs of last year.

Persian - Empire (Emotional-Especial)

Nice to see one of our pet labels Especial are hitting 2019 running with a wonderful EP of deeper than deep house cuts from Persian, fusing the evocative sounds of the Middle East with the classic house sounds of Chicago.

Y-Bayani and his Band of Enlightenment, Reason and Love - Asembi Ara Amba (Philophon)

After the unique & timeless "Rehwe Mie Enyim" from 2018 it's good to see the wonderfully and wishfully entitled Y-Bahani and his Band of Enlightenment, Reason and Love back with another slice of killer Ghanaian Reggae for Philophon.

Warmth - Parallel Remixed (Archives)

One of my favourite ambient drone albums of 2018 from Warmth on Archives has just been lovingly remixed & is simultaneously stimulating & caressing my cerebrum on my sun soaked, Sunday morning headphone session.

Weekly recommendations - 12/1/2019

Our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's recommendations just in case you don't want to follow us daily on social media.

Brona McVittie - We Are The Wildlife

I'm very happy to have finally discovered the beautifully arranged, classily produced, electronically tickled, genre flirting, traditional meets modern folk sounds of singer of songs & plucker of harps Brona McVittie. A lovely laid back weekend listen.

Anatolian Weapons - Black Sea (Lurid Music)

More great music for a great cause as Anatolian Weapons comes through with 4 proper, world music fusing, deep house tracks on Lurid Music with all proceeds going to help Humanity Crew provide psychological aid to refugees.

Hubert Daviz - Diezel EP (Bandcamp Self Release)

Germany's Hubert Daviz has always retained the bump whilst being one of the more interesting, adventurous beatmakers around & his latest EP of leftfield, late night, micro dosed, beat noir is no exception.

REv.Lewis - Zenith (Bandcamp Self Release)

Stripped back, precision focused, conscious neo-soul with a healthy dose of spoken word that wears it's 20th century roots with pride & can unashamedly carry the R&B label from Rev.Lewis.

James Stephen Finn - Three Months (Bandcamp Self Release)

I'm not usually much of a glitch fan but when it's as cultured and subtle as James Stephen Finn's comforting piano, guitar and technology melding, electro acoustic LP, Three Months then I'm all in.

Golden Ivy - Monika (Malmo Inre)

Combining an Amazonian ritualistic sensibility with Northern folk traditions, lit by a solar powered electronic glow & propelled by a subtly hypnotic, animistic, Motorik pulse make sure you check out this wonderful LP from Golden Ivy for Malmö Inre.

Pax - Because We're Old (Bandcamp Self Release)

If hip hop had been invented in Laurel Canyon it would sound something like this guitar led, sun and soul imbued, laidback, languid, lounging, love filled Sunday suitable, LP from Los Angeles' Pax

Recommendations Round Up - 5/1/2019

Our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's recommendations just in case you don't want to follow us daily on social media.

Zoltan Fecso - Conversations for One (Bandcamp Self Release)

More on point, pointillism inspired, minimal ambient vibes from Zoltan Fecso on this all too short, hastily arranged, quickly improvised but lovingly crafted EP that is sounding great with the winter sunshine streaming through my windows.

Objekt - Cocoon Crush (PAN)

Balancing darkness with rays of hope & thankfully slowing the tempo so we can appreciate the cinematic futurism, soundscaping craftsmanship, otherworldliness, mixed emotions & wordless critique on our disorienting times is Objekt's LP for PAN. An incredible listen.

ALEX KASSIAN - HIDDEN TROPICS (UTOPIA RECORDS)

Check out the seemingly ayahuasca fuelled, ambient inclined, New Age minimalism, technology & nature fusing, deep house flirting sounds of Alex Kassian on Utopia Records out of London.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SALAAm FOR YEMEN (HIBERNATE/DRONARIVM)

Inspired by the humanitarian tragedy in Yemen, two great labels Hibernate Recordings & Dronarivm combine forces to raise money for War Child UK with this excellent selection of ambient, electro acoustic, drone and modern compositional music from some of the top names in the game.

ISORINNE - STUMHETENS (NORTHERN ELECTRONICS)

A soothing yet stirring, ambient electronic soundtrack for brave new futuristic worlds from Isorinne for Northern Electronics seems like an apt start to the New Year as sore heads swim with new ideas and plans for fresh starts. Here's to a more peaceful, sustainable, equitable, tolerant and caring 2019.
