The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Slow Music Recommendations Round-up - 23/2/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you don't want to ride the algorithmic rollercoaster on social media.

Tilliander - Expect Resistance/Respect Existence (Dub on Arrival)

Picture
NASA has detected extraterrestrial low end frequencies through a fray in the time space continuum. Encouragingly Tilliander & the other alien life forms sound dread and like they're tripping.

Snow Palms - Everything Ascending (Village Green)

A welcome return by Snow Palms with two epic tracks, stylistically opposed but united through drama & drive. Check out the electronically enriched, minimalism meets modern classical, glockenspiel, clarinet & vocal enhanced joys of this glorious EP for Village Green Recordings.

Richard Norris - Abstractions Volume One (Group Mind Records)

In no great hurry but with a clarity of purpose and equipment mastery only an electronic veteran could muster Richard Norris presents a welcome escape hatch to warmer ambient music worlds. Best served immersed but wafting also an option.

Lucas Arruda - Onda Nova (Favourite Recordings)

Midweek musical sunshine with Lucas Arruda as he jumps again into his soulful sedan for Favorite Recordings but manages to slam on the breaks just before driving over an AOR cliff edge. Brazilian boogie that your Mum wouldn't moan about.

A.A. Bondy - Images of Love (Fat Possum Records)

Artist discovery of yesterday was A.A. Bondy & his new song, "Images in Love" in anticipation of his new LP for Fat Possum Records. Get round the abrupt ending by putting it on repeat and check out his back catalogue is my advice.

Pablo Guerrero & Finis Africae - Los Dioses Hablan Por Boca De Los Vecinos (Abstrakce Records)

Pachamama's instrumental voices are layered onto a minimal, ambient bed of field recordings, samples & subtle synths by Finis Africae to provide a perfect bed for the unhurried, sombre yet sensual thoughts of Spanish poet Pablo Guerrero for Abstrakce Records.

Kankyo Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 (Light in the Attic)

You could do a lot worse this Sunday than discover that Kankyō Ongaku is Japanese for Ambient, Environmental & New Age music by listening to this wonderful snapshot of the genre selected by Spencer Doran for the aptly named Light In The Attic Records.

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you don't want to ride the algorithmic rollercoaster on social media.

Euglossine - Coriolis (Hausu Mountain)

Somewhere in a galaxy far far away, there is an easy listening lounge bar where the cosmic cocktails have been spiked and house jazz band, Euglossine, have had one too many. More far out vibrations courtesy of Hausu Mountain.

Bjarki - Happy Earthday (!K7)

Get your Friday freak on with the ever inventive
Bjarki's new LP of peculiar & personalized electronica for !K7 Records. From braindance to ambient via deep house & liquid drum and bass, he's got the electronic music spectrum very listenably covered.

James Place - Still Waves To A Whisper (!K7)

The ever reliable James Place has come through with another border bashing EP for Mexico's Umor Rex of his trademark, slightly dystopian, hauntology inclined, sample saturated, densely layered ambient house.

Jaze Baqti - Mnemos (Bandcamp Self Release)

Good to see Jaze Baqti back with more of his signature, stripped back, haute hip hop imagined soul, jazz, disco & house designs.

Matt Lajoie - The Center and the Fringe (Flower Room)

Exit the machine by the nearest door, take your first left & jump aboard the transcendental highway to a warmer, more caring, loving, harmonious place with the Kosmische caressed, psychedelically expressed, cosmic guitar and new age of New Age vibes of the excellent new LP from Matt Lajoie for Flower Room

Glasbird - Gronland (White Label Records)

A wonderful, cultured Sunday listen, although inadvisable if your heating has broken as Glåsbird adopts a suitably, frigorific onomatopoic, modern compositional approach to giving Greenland it's own electro acoustic ambient soundtrack using stirring strings, drones & piano for Whitelabrecs. Thanks to the excellent Stationary Travels blog for the tip.

Dub Colossus - Dr. Strangedub (Good Deeds)

Dub don Dub Colossus is back & dialling back the Ethiopian vibes that have made this one of the most interesting JA fusion projects of the last ten years but turning the jazz and horns up to 11 to more than compensate.

Flamingo Pier - Flamingo Pier EP (Soundway)

Strut into the weekend with one of the best nu-disco EPs I've heard in a while from Flamingo Pier for Soundway Records. Tropically tinged, pop skirting, acid flirting & deep housing whilst bridging the decades with feel good, positive vibes & smiles for days.

Duendita - Direct Line to my Creator (Bandcamp Self Release)

Currently being blown away by
Duendita's jazz tinted, gospel soaked, inventively arranged breath of super fresh soul air.

G.S. Schray - First Appearance (Last Resort)

The Delines - The Imperial (El Cortez)

Making lyrics & Americana great again, the blue eyed country got classic soul of The Delines & El Cortez records tell the stories of America's forgotten people in the most compelling fashion.

If you're in need of some winter warmth and a Monday nudge then I suggest you ease your way into the week with the nature inspired ambient & gentle early morning electronic rays of the new Kenji Kihara / sphontik LP for Eilean Rec.

Andrew Wasylyk - The Paralian (Athens of the North)

Check out the Sunday suitable, Grecian harp centered, soul searching, North Sea serenading, jazz caressed, neo classically kissed, electro acoustic ambient joys of Andrew Wasylyk's great new LP for Athens of the North

Masaki Batoh - Nowhere (Drag City)

Japan's Masaki Batoh uses his strings of steel to expertly & compellingly fuse English with Japanese, circular with free picking & Delta blues with assorted shades of Americana in this psychedelic folk masterpiece for Drag City Records.

Various Artists - Two Tribes (Agogo Records)

An excellent snapshot from
Agogo Records of modern African European musical cross pollination. From Afro electronic fusion to traditional sounds & fertile collaborations, cosmic grooves to club bangers, it's all here.

Mac-tallah Nan Creag - The Sorrow of Derdriu (Firecracker)

A sprawling, quite stunning deconstruction of Scottish folklore told through ancient instruments, field recordings, vocal ingenuity reimagined through the minimal, ambient & electronic eyes of Hoch Ma Toch, Other Lands & Lord Of The Isles for Firecracker Recordings

Julia Kent - Temporal (Leaf Label)

Admittedly the songs were initially composed for visual mediums - theatre and dance, but this original, moving & cultured modern classical electronic fusion LP driven by Julia Kent's consummate cello for Leaf Label really needs its own film.

Building Instrument - Mangelen Min (Hubro)

A real roller coaster LP from Norway as Building Instrument hit the sweet spot between experimental and listenable with their unique blend of Nordic folk rock pop, live drums, synths, sampling & distinctive vocals for HUBRO & travel from the cosmic campfire to the club with ease.
