The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Various Artists - Five Years (Youngbloods)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
Picture

WHAT WE SAY:

The ever interesting Youngbloods label have hit their 5th birthday &, keeping their eyes on the road with a satisfied glance in the rearview mirror, are celebrating with this stunning, stylistically meandering, largely downtempo, always atmospheric compilation of artists old and new.

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

The form of an object, in part, finds definition in its points and intersections. Linear movements meet at a crossroad only to alter trajectory and build upon each course change. Slowly but surely, one becomes two, two becomes three; what once began as a simple dash across nothingness assumes a robust purpose and reveals meaningful multi-dimensional features.

Forms, as a series of musical collections, opts for measured themes unique to each edition. Meditative, with carefully constructed folds, the compilation is sewn together with the intent to capture, and make tangible, concepts in motion.

For the latest edition to our compilation series we invited some artists whose efforts constitute our past and some artists that represent our future to help us celebrate our fifth anniversary as a record imprint. Starting with our very first release in November 2014 we have sought to pay tribute to the music that gives us pause and to create artifacts that cement that beauty. Each song herein marks a waypoint in our paradoxical lineage, bound together by the urgent need to grow fast yet age slow. We thank them all, today, tomorrow, and hereafter.

*EXCLUSIVE TO BANDCAMP FOR 1 MONTH
The "Five Years" compilation will be available from all digital outlets starting Friday 24 January 2020

Crooked Weather - Are We Lost (Self Released)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
WHAT ONE OF THEIR VIDEOS LOOK LIKE:
Picture
Vertical Divider

WHAT WE SAY:

Stylistically bobbing up and down somewhere in the mid-Atlantic and with a bit more ballast than your average folksters I'm happy to have finally picked up on this psychedelic, folk rock gem from Yorkshire's
Crooked Weather. On repeat this morning.

WHAT YOUR EARS SAY:

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

They are mainly songs that have been born out of the ups and downs of spending a lot of life on the road. Sometimes everything just makes sense and you can’t understand how things could be anything but beautiful, yet at other times the bottom falls out, desperation takes hold and all seems lost.

Tracks 1-9 were recorded at Uber Studios in Hull with Rob Burgess. Between Rob, Holly and Will they covered basically all instrumentations. The exact breakdown of some of the more secondary instruments can’t quite be remembered. We consider this a good thing! All songs were primarily mixed at Uber with Rob, Holly and Will before they were sent over to Fairview to be remixed and mastered.

Track 10 was recorded at Fairview Studios in Hull with John Spence and had Holly and Will on vocals and guitar and Dave and Tom on drums and bass respectively.

John Spence at Fairview studios mixed and mastered all tracks.

Holly Blackshaw - Vocals and rhythm guitar throughout
Will Bladen - Vocals, rhythm and lead guitar throughout, slide guitar, bass
Rob Burgess - Drums, slide guitar, keys, bass
Beth Nicholson - Cello, track 1
Dave Tomlinson - Drums, track 10
Tom Skelly - Bass, track 10

All music is by Crooked Weather
Artwork is by Holly Blackshaw
Photo (and faithful roadie) credits go to Ella Blackshaw

This album is dedicated to Bari Razzaki. Most trusted friend, unofficial Crooked Weather member and a bright light to follow at any time. Peace.

MinaeMinae - Variante (Human Pitch)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
Picture
WHAT WE SAY:

Great work from Human Pitch & rainbow warrior Minaelminae as his playful polyrhythms unite the 99% in earth healing, demagogue defying, societal fracture healing ritual dance & New Age tribalism.

WHAT YOUR EARS SAY:

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

Stuttgart, Germany based multimedia artist and producer MinaeMinae delivers his debut release of cosmic polyrhythmic explorations with 'Variante.' Whether beamed in from the future or uncovered from the past, Variante calls to mind a place and time far from here and now. Synthetic mallets and anti-guitars comprise the record’s gritty foundation, while interlocking melodics and where’s-the-one rhythms tessellate a kaleidoscopic patchwork.

Born and raised in a small German village far from city life, MinaeMinae’s formative musical experience began by making music for his village friends to enjoy using his tape recorder, microphone, a janky keyboard and, later, a simple freeware multitrack DAW. This sense of childlike play stayed constant throughout MinaeMinae’s adulthood and informed the process in which he created 'Variante.' “When I make music, I try to stay in an intuitive flow. I try to play as a kid would,” says MinaeMinae. “A child can play forever without becoming tired. There is no competition, no comparison, there is no direct purpose, no usability. The purpose is the game itself.”

Composed after an inspiring first trip to India, 'Variante' is an attempt to interpret the subjective impressions of his first visit outside of the western world. “I felt very naive,” says MinaeMinae. “The attempt to reflect this other world alone with my existing knowledge had to fail; it was doomed to fail. It seems to me arrogant to put this world in my mind's drawers. So I tried to see this world with an ‘innocent eye,’ through the eyes of a child.”

The term “the innocent eye” was coined by the Victorian era English art critic John Ruskin in his book 'Elements of Drawing' (1857). In order to learn how to draw, Ruskin writes that one must see the world, colors, and shades with “the innocence of the eye,” or, in other words, a childlike perception. “This approach, in the artistic sense, may be a bit dated. The concept of ‘innocence’ seems strange from today's point of view, but for me, this approach was interesting. It reduces the sensory impressions and complexity of the world which helps in creative work,” MinaeMinae explains.

'Variante' is not a direct copy or interpretation of Indian music or culture, rather, it’s “an attempt to approach the tragedy of the impossibility of complete understanding of other cultures, and to accept this tragedy with the utmost respect and humility for the foreign. This acceptance of non-knowledge creates new possibilities to musically translate my own subjective impressions,” explains MinaeMinae.

Through the percussive glimmers of 'Variante,' another far-off world, seemingly familiar and foreign, takes shape. A world that offers listeners the space for thoughts and impressions to drift, dock, or swirl in the many shifting spaces between rhythms.

MinaeMinae’s 'Variante' will be released November 1, 2019 on vinyl and digital formats via Human Pitch.

Nappy Nina - Dumb Doubt (Lucid Haus)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
Picture
WHAT WE SAY:

Funky fresh, more bounce to the ounce, positive throwback hip hop vibes with Nappy Nina on a mission for Lucid Haus as holding her head high she flips a feel good f*ck you & swiftly spat soliloquies at self doubt.

WHAT YOUR EARS SAY:

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

Dumb Doubt is about getting loose, about holding all of the things that you doubt about yourself closely. Its about fickle feelings from fumbled text and twitter triggers, it is easy to feel like we are not doing the right thing these days. It is a reminder for our folks that we are not a fluke, we are not fake and our resilience is real.

Pedro Kastelijns - Som das Luzis (OAR)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
WHAT HIS VIDEO LOOKS LIKE:
Picture
Vertical Divider

WHAT WE SAY:

Weird up your Tuesday with the experimental Brazilian sounds of visual artist & one man band Pedro Kastelijns for OAR, as the familiar, sweeter sounds of his home country cut through the reality distorting purple haze to offer a melodic lifeline in the psychedelic swirl.
Vertical Divider
WHAT YOUR EARS SAY:

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

At the age of 15, in Goiânia, Brazil, Pedro Kastelijns began making music to help overcome the weight of the world he began feeling as his childhood ascended into adulthood. Kastelijns soon came to discover himself as an artist, first through music, then with drawings.

Som das Luzis, translated as Sound of Lights, is Pedro Kastelijn’s first internationally distributed album (via OAR on December 6). He describes the work as a personal prophecy. “Luzir” in Portuguese means “to shine, gleam, glow” — and even “to blaze, grow, and bloom”. With those verbs as inspiration, Som das Luzis was realized.

“I locked myself in my room to dream and to ask for myself to grow and bloom in 12 songs. The album is essentially a request to the universe for a chance to shine, to be part of something bigger than myself, here on Earth”, Pedro describes. It was a 5-year long process.

“I was already involved intimately in the music scene of Goiânia, seeing my friends from Boogarins, Luziluzia, Carne Doce and many other acts in town making recordings, playing concerts and touring. I felt compelled to follow the same path. Benke (Boogarins’ guitarist) lent me some good microphones and his old set of drums, basically the stuff he used to record Boogarins first album As Plantas Que Curam (2013). He also brought me good guitar pedals, and a 2-channel sound card that he got during Boogarins’ first tour in the US. So suddenly I had a lot of new gear and I was ready to record my first full length album.”

“The recording period was a very fun period of my life, surrounded by a lot of music, jams, art making, friends and parties. Inspired by my creative friends at the time, Som das Luzis was a calling to the universe and myself to open the doors that would lead me to the creative life and music career I wanted for myself. It is an album that with its making I was knocking on the doors of my authentic and creative path.”

Following the release of a collection of his early recordings, Raposa (2015, Lalonge), Kastelijns toured as a solo act in major Brazilian cities — São Paulo, Recife, Brasília, Porto Alegre. In 2017, Pedro released Assim Nascem as Amoras, a multimedia project consisting of a book with Pedro’s drawings and poetry accompanied with an original soundtrack recorded and produced by the artist complimenting a short film.

Now based in Amsterdam, Kastelijns can be found performing concerts throughout Europe, when not experimenting in his visual arts studio getting his hands dirty.

TSMM presents Lazy & Hazy#11 for Radio Primavera Sound

Welcome to the latestwww.primaverasound.com/radio radio show for Radio Primavera Sound where meandering abstract jazz & baroquetronica soon gives way to all sorts of indie folk fusion before a mid-show ambient interlude paves the way for a psychedelic, cosmic rock, computer game soundtrack that runs like a long lost son into the arms of NY Indo jazz until a suitably outernational Balearic selection provides a lively last leg.

WHAT WE SAY:

Wow, the power of music. For years I've viewed Christmas as a climate disaster accelerating, over consumption frenzy & capitalist abomination, soundtracked by on repeat, disingenuous sentiment laden musical drivel. Then like the ghosts of Christmas, along comes this LP from Pepper Mill Rondo for Hausu Mountain & changes my entire outlook. Happy birthday Santa & God bless everyone.

Shida Shahabi - Shifts (130701/Sing a Song Fighter

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:
Picture

WHAT WE SAY:

I've largely ignored the slew of very popular, extremely dull piano releases the last few years but Shida Shahabi has a real down to earth, simplistic joy & convention ignoring honesty that has really grabbed me. Her intimate, creatively recorded recent collaboration with cellist Linnea Olsson for 130701/Sing a Song Fighter is no exception.
Vertical Divider
WHAT YOUR EARS SAY:

WHAT THE PRESS RELEASE SAYS:

Fresh off the release of last fall’s beautiful "Homes" LP, Shida Shahabi has cut new wonderful compositions for a 5-track album out as a co-release between UK label FatCat’s 130701 imprint and Swedish label Sing a song fighter, "Shifts" merges Shahabi’s mood-altering JG Malmsjö upright piano with the windswept cello parts of Linnea Olsson and approaches the piano from unforeseen angles and this feels like a fresh start. From the opening track and the time-stopping single ”Futō” to the closing track ”Keiki” this album sees Shida Shahabi rise to new heights.
