The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Slow Music Recommendations Round Up - 30/3/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Lena Raine - Oneknowing (Local Action)

Venturing out from her virtual OST cave after 12 years, Lena Raine attempts to soundtrack the 3D world for a change with her debut LP for Local Action. Unsurprisingly for a black belt in emotion & atmosphere she has created a fine, chilled, evocative companion to the human condition & life's ups, downs, sadness, joy, uncertainty & achivevement.

Zoltan Fecso - Silken Wave (The Slow Music Movement)

OK so there might be an element of self interest here but the third release on
The Slow Music Movement label from Zoltan Fecso is now widely available. The two tracks gradually reveal the meticulously crafted beauty of their pointillistic ambient structure, slowly but surely warming you like a summer sunrise and leaving you with a similar feeling of wellbeing. Enjoy :)

Caleb Burhans - Past Lives (Cantaloupe Music)

It must be age, this is the 2nd LP this week I've recommended related to thoughts of those who have passed. Again though, amongst the emotion stirring modern composition & introspective, electro-acoustic arrangements from maestro Caleb Burhans for Cantaloupe Music, is space for fond memories & cause for wry optimism.

Sonmi451 - Nachtmuziek (Astral Industries)

Burning brightly in 2019 Astral Industries are back with another great release this time from Sonmi451 who makes all the right found and formed ambient noises on this lovely listen. Also got to mention the consistently outstanding label artwork from Theo Ellsworth.

OSO LEONE - Gallery Love (Apollo Records)

Seemingly detached from life's stress and strife Barcelona based OSO LEONE have just dropped a lovely album of epsom salted, ambient bubble topped, electronically warmed to body temperature, soulful dream pop for Apollo Records. Now relaxxxxxxx....

Various Artists - Undercover Lovers selected by Psychemagik

Put some magic into your Monday with these obscure, feel good cover versions of a few familiar, guilty pleasure, faves that should put a spring in your step and a smile on your face courtesy of dusty diggers Psychemagik.

Hampshire & Foat - Saint Lawrence (Athens of the North)

Made even more Sunday suitable as it was recorded in two churches, the latest, all too short, album for Athens of the North from Hampshire, Greg Foat & friends is a mellow acid folk, jazz dusted delight.

The Slow Music Movement Radio Show #38

Welcome to the latest Slow Music Movement radio show which is also broadcast on the excellent Music For Dreams radio station. A lovely dreamy pop start to the show soon giveways to some serious ambient vibes before we head into ethereal, leftfield electronic territory. Things then go all dubbed out slow house, deep dub and then evocative Arabic electoronic fusions. Deep spiritual jazz is then followed by some Afro soul before deep oddball, psyched house finished the show off nicely.

smileswithteeth - love (Never Content)
Helado Negro - Two Lucky (RVNG INTL)
YGT - Cast Away (Youngbloods)
Carly Barton - Cave World (Periphery)

Slow Music Recommendations Round UP - 23/3/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Benoit Honoré & sean Curtis Patrick - Avocationals (Beacon Sound)

As with all good obituaries, Benoît Pioulard and Sean Curtis Patrick remember the lives rather than emphasize the loss, of all the people that perished on the sunken boats of the Great Lakes. Gentle, melancholic but beautiful, touching, tape loop based, analogue ambient music for Beacon Sound.

MADMADMAD - MADMADMAD (STAC Records)

Another slice of (not) slow music to fire you out of the Friday cannon into the weekend from MADMADMAD. 2019 seems to be a vintage year already for a new wave of post punk & here is another fresh take that surfs various waves & swerves about recklessly, even into house & techno to great effect for STAC Records.

MEDLINE - A QUEST CALLED TRIBE (MYBAGS)

The hip hop rooted, all live, instrumental soul jazz funk sounds of multi-instrumentalist Medline meet the visual arts of Stephane Carricondo in this heartfelt & honourary arts clash tribute to A Tribe Called Quest for the ever great My Bags label.

Vieo Abiungo - The Dregs (Lost Tribe Sound)

Rescued from dusty hard drive obscurity by Lost Tribe Sound check out this cohesive collection of disjointed, listenably experimental, global folk abstractions and de/reconstructions from Vieo Abiungo (aka William Ryan Fritch).

Meitei - Komachi (Metron/Seance Centre)

Merging distant field recordings of life's industrial & natural surface noise with a rhythmic but very Japanese ambient aesthetic & sound palette, Meitei / 冥丁 sonically & subtly laments the fading importance of Japan's customs & rituals for Métron/Séance Centre

Clever Austin - Pareidolia (Touching Bass)

Launch into the week with the all live, state of the art, jazz injected, microdosed, fresh funk and genuinely neoteric soul fusion sound of Clever Austin for Touching Bass.

Seahawks - Eyes of the Moon (Cascine)

Sunday soundtrack sorted with the excellent new Seahawks album for Cascine. Pulse bypass percussion, THC tickled somnolent ambient synthscapes & new age of New Age vibes - perfect for daydreaming & seventh day sofa slumbering.

Slow Music Recommendations Round Up - 16/3/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

The Come is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of The Deep Mystery (IMPULSE)

I'm honestly breathless after listening to the new The Comet is Coming LP for Impulse Records - what a ride. Hold tight drums, cosmic calm, punk's balls, epic sci-fi prog rock synthscapes & Shabaka Hutchings jazz rooted saxaphone spearhead. A battle cry for love to come out swinging.

Jeremy Hyman - FT048A (FUTURE TIMES)

For a transcendental weekend warm up check out the new Jeremy Hyman EP for FUTURE TIMES as he melts new age of New Age vibes into the dreamiest house and broken techno vibes seen since 90's Goan full moon party, chillout zones.

ILHAN ERSAHIN - SILVER (NUBLU)

Ethereal jazzscapes from Ilhan Ersahin as he teams up with Eddie Henderson to fuse minimal electronics & ambient tropes with sensual, late night, less is more jazz arrangements.

POLYMAR - A POLYMAR COMPENDIUM

Midweek machine meditation with this tour around
Kelpe's hypnotically honed, minimally arranged, synth saturated alter ego Polymar & a recently fine tuned LP lookback through the hip hopstrumental to house work of his secret friend.

SNAPPED ANKLES - STUNNING LUXURY (LEAF LABEL)

Everyone needs a shock to the system every now & then so check out the (not so) slow music of Snapped Ankles for a dose of capitalism questioning, unhinged, freshly twisted, 21st century post punk with attitude for Leaf Label. Check the tour dates & when you see them tell them to come to Lisbon.

Jah Wobble & Bill Laswell - Realm of Spells

Double (bass) trouble & carrying on 2019's great run of esoteric dub fusion releases is the new LP from Jah Wobble & Bill Laswell's who, with their crack group, take a trip through low end frequency anchored, cosmic jazz fusion. Big up Burl Veneer (Music) for another great tip.

Zoltan Fecso - Silken Wave (The Slow Music Movement Label)

Get a taste of
Zoltan Fecso's incredible, forthcoming, pointilism inspired, electro-acoustic EP for The Slow Music Movement label - dropping at the end of the month.

JAB - Erg Herbe (Shelter Press)

Slightly restless Sunday listening sorted with the wind powered, deftly juxtaposed, new age of New Age far flung folk flutes meets New York plugged in minimalism of John Also Bennett for the every excellent Shelter Press

Slow Music Recommendations Round UP - 9/3/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Helado Negro - This Is How You Smile (RVNGIntl.)

Take an easy listening Spanglish trip down memory lane with Helado Negro and his warm, wobbly, welcoming, wayward, acoustic synth pop, nostalgic tones & hidden depths for Rvng Intl. Every track is a winner - another one for the 2019 best of lists.

Slow Women Playlist

It seems like a good moment to reflect on, highlight and celebrate some of the female artists that have enriched The Slow Music Movement with their talent, creativity and presence over the last couple of years.

The selection is also available on Youtube
andDeezer.

The Chi Factory - The Mantra Recordings (Astral Industries)

An epic ambient tribute to poet Robert Lax as The Chi Factory holistically meld Greek field recordings, digital surface noise, lethargic cobbled ritual percussion & new age of New Age vibes into a hallucinatory yet wholesome late night listen for Astral Industries.

Cheekbone / Hirotaka Shirotsubaki - No. 56 (Muzan Editions)

A welcome slice of midweek serenity on this double headed, singularly purposed release of unhurried, warming ambient drones from Cheekbone & Hirotaka Shirotsubaki for Japan's Muzan Editions.

Dominique Fils-Aimé - Stay Tuned! (Ensoul Records)

We recommended the Dominique Fils-Aimé debut LP & have no hesitation in urging you to sink into her sophomore for Ensoul Records. With a voice that, at various times, reminds us of all the best parts of the last 70 years of soul music, ever inventive arrangements & more of a social conscience than the Billboard Hot 100 combined. Her star continues to rise and so should your interest.

Weval - The Weight (Kompakt)

Start the week with the future classic debut LP from Weval for Kompakt Records, one for the end of year lists already. Dense but penetrable, dark, light, electronic, organic, pop, underground - but always downright emotional.

Yutaka Hirasaka - Element (Bandcamp)

The whimsical yet articulate, lightly accompanied guitar musings of Tokyo's Yutaka Hirasaka are a fine Sunday listen and a perfect soundtrack for life's interludes. Big up Hush Hush Records Bandcamp feed - a constant glow in the underground music shadows, for the tip

Slow Music Recommendations Round up - 2/3/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to hopefully ride the algorithmic rollercoaster on social media.

Infinite Spirit Music - Live Without Fear (Jazzman)

The jazz hat is on and beard being stroked to the deep, golden age, spiritual jazz of Infinite Spirit Music. Big up Jazzman Records for giving it a proper 2019 vinyl+digital reissue making it eternally & widely accessible to all music lovers rather than just the dusty shelf fillers :)

Scott Gilmore - Two Roomed Motel (Crammed)

It's been interesting charting the evolution of Scott Gilmore & with his new LP for Crammed Discs he's less lo-fi, new age of New Age & more microdosed, wayward, seemingly care free, dreamy string & synth pop but still charming and very listenable.

Secret Circuit - Data Collector EP (Bandcamp Self Release)

Remember when Thursday was the start of the weekend? Get the party started with the new EP from
Secret Circuit - playful, deep, forward leaning, Déjà Vu inducing, wobbly, toad licked, house vibes with a feel-good factor.

Organic Pulse Ensemble - Transcending the Sum (Urban Waves)

Quality new spiritual jazz LP from Sweden's best sounding misnomer, the Organic Pulse Ensemble for Urban Waves. Remarkably, the super talented onesemble, Gustav Horneij plays every instrument. I'm looking forward to the live show :)

smileswithteeth - Care (Bandcamp Self Release)

In troubling times it's good to see an artist call to arms, especially when those arms are caring, open wide & ready to embrace. Check out the reconstructed live jazz session rooted, laid back, soulful beats & fine sentiments of Smileswithteeth.

Quentin Sirjacq - Companion (Schole)

France's Quentin Sirjacq provides the delicate yet defining thread that stitches the seemingly disparate, inventively arranged electronic, jazz, classical, cinematic & even Afro patches into a warm and welcoming listen for Japan's Schole Records.

Last Days - Fragments (Bandcamp Self Release)

Sunday listening sorted with this eminently listenable and hard to fathom why they were ever, collection of outtakes and reworks from Last Days showcasing his electro acoustic, modern classical, ambient, cinematic fusing artistry.
