The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Slow Music Recommendations round up - 25/5/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

ML Wah - Heavenly Host (Flower Room)

More healing frequencies and cosmic realm probing from Flower Room as they release the meditative, East & West uniting, Kosmische & subtly dub caressed drones & improvised spiritual explorations of ML Wah into a world searching & desperately in need of meaning.

Deep Nalstrom - Naive melodies (Natural Selections)

Have a hazy weekend with this sonic spirit guide to your inner self and hitherto unchartered cosmic realms as Deep Nalstrom fuses all manner of seemingly ayahuasca inspired psychedelic tribal tropery into a mellow, mind expanding, musical meander for the excellent Natural Selections.

Thomas William HIll - Grains of Space (Village Green)

Nudging classical music into more accessible & 21st century relevant forms, Nottingham's one man orchestra Thomas William Hill, has crafted a wonderfully moving, global instrument uniting, viola da gamba looped & rooted, modern compositional electronic fusion of the highest order for Village Green Recordings

Mourning [A] BLKstar - Reckoning (Don Giovanni)

I love it when an LP comes along & singlehandedly reignites my interest in a genre that had slipped down my listening priorities. Well Ohio's Mourning [A] BLKstar have just brought out my inner soul boy by capturing the pain, power, heart & social messages of 60's & 70's soul music & the blues that came before it & reshaping it for our new troubled times and beyond via Don Giovanni Records. Wow.

M. Geddes Gengras - I Am The Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World (Hausu Mountain)

An epic slice of slowly building, immersive, deep space ambient from M. Geddes Gengras for Hausu Mountain. Starting off in easy orbit the engines slowly engage layer upon layer of free noise, electronic interference & percussive sounds that slowly build to a dramatic finale before a final prolactin aided sonic embrace induces a calm & contended sleep.

Steve Moore - Beloved Exile (Temporary Residence)

Sooth the Monday blues as Steve Moore masterfully fuses new age of New Age vibes with the beguiling voice of Tunisia's Emel Mathlouthi, the enchanting harp of Mary Lattimore and his own blend of vintage synthesized cinematic serenity for Temporary Residence.

Hipnotic Earth - Suspended in Silence (WhitelabRecs.)

Really lovely Sunday listening as Hipnotic Earth, overlays his soothing tones & daydreamy drones with the morning animal sounds of his orchard studio location & the gentlest of instrument sounds to create this wonderful nature kissed electro acoustic ambient LP for Whitelabrecs

Slow Music Recommendations Round up - 18/5/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Sydney - Ode to eSwatini (Black Acre)

Great work from
Sydney as he nudges the UK nu-jazz continuum into exciting Afro hip hopstrumental territory by injecting it with field recordings & local musicians he met during his adventures to eSwatini. Funky, fresh Afro roots meets Bristol fusion on Black Acre.

Anadol - Uzun Havalar (Pingipung Records)

Forgetting her shopping one day Anadol made a one pot, lo-fi Turkish psychedelic folk stew of past their sell by date synth sounds, a dusty jazz cube, some odd looking dried mushrooms, wilting vocals, got some of her musical housemates to take it in turns stirring & invited Pingipung Records for dinner. It was oddly delicious.

14KT - For My Sanity (First Word)

Deep, hip hop rooted, broken jazz beats from 14KT aided by who's who of keeping it real collaborators for First Word Records. Loose beats & vibes for days will keep all the head nodders & foot droppers, snapping and shuffling for the summer & beyond.

ind_fris - Sink (Scaffolder Records)

The breezy, Balearic, summer suitable, jazz flirting, house courting new age of New Age electronic fusion from Osaka, Japan's ind_fris on his own Scaffolder Recordings is easing me into the day nicely.

Yu Su - Roll With The Punches (Second Circle)

A mesmerizing mish mash of all things lazy & hazy from Yu Su for Music From Memory. Languid, hypnotic percussion melts into Balearic balminess, the sounds of nature synergize with pleasant electronica & misty vocals float above the warmth & sounds of Eastern sunrises.

Toby Gale - Syzygy (Activia Benz)

Like an expensive car that travels faster than it feels, Toby Gale combines Smooth FM, new age of New Age & future chill pill vibes with an overpowered yet spacious electronic engine to create a chilled cosmic hybrid cruiser for Activia Benz.

offthesky - illuminate (Eilean Records)

Sunday suitable listening as
Offthesky takes a lazy & hazy tour around experimental yet gentle ambient realms. Ethereal vocals float above gently shifting sands of momentary harp, sax, keys & strings as ebbing & flowing drones unite modern compositional moments with fleeting sound designs for Eilean Rec.

The Slow Music Movement presents - Lazy & Hazy #6

Welcome to the latest Slow Music Movement show for Radio Primavera Sound which is now avaible to stream.

Ambient drones meet Iranian strings before interplanetary folk, spiritual jazz and cosmic beats take control. Ethereal jazztronica melds into dreamy Balearic goodness before the modern dub takeover melts into African vibes and a nice deep house finish.

Tim Hecker - Step away from Konoyo (Kranky)
Kronos Quartet featuring Marjan Vahdat - My Tresses in the Wind (Kirkelig Kulturverkstes)
Craig Leon - The Gates Made Plain (RVNG INTL)
Clever Austin - Mother Ship Strip feat. Cazeaux Oslo (Touching Bass)

Slow Music Recommendation Round Up - 11/5/19

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

A.A. bondy - Enderness (Fat Possum Records)

After falling in love with the lead single, I'm now also enamored by A.A. Bondy's LP of sad eyed, lo-fi electronic wrapped, soulful indie folk pop, nonchalent world weariness & strangely soothing sardonic social commentary for Fat Possum Records.

Diggory Kenrick & The Prophets - Vengeance (Pressure Sounds)

Deeper than deep, hipper than hipster, righteous not riotous roots and dub reggae from Diggory Kenrick & The Prophets, graced with the sax and flute of Tommy McCook from the evergreen Pressure Sounds.

Joseph Shabason - Anne EP (Western Vinyl)

The official release is tomorrow but 80% of the tracks are available on Bandcamp & I can't wait any longer to highlight the new Joseph Shabason EP on Western Vinyl as he takes his lazy & hazy jazz sax on a further electronic ambient journey whilst embracing the new age of New Age along the way.

Schemes - Schemes (alldayjam)

A perfect fusion of all live hip hop beats, cultured nu-soul, deep jazz flavours, conscious lyrics & all round niceness from Montreal's Schemes for alldayjam.

Native Indian - Vol 1: nature of the Self (Boxout FM)

I'm always happy to find a hip hop LP that fits the Slow Music remit & this doubly so as Native Indian, rather unusually, comes from India. Geography aside check out his conscious & cosmic, futuristic & fresh, psyched & singular sound and big up to one of the homes of the Indian underground Boxout.fm for helping get it out there.

Dennis Young - Visions (Daehanelectronics)

After becoming a No Wave dance music legend Dennis Young from Liquid Liquid then randomly recorded some New Age tape releases with a bit of a NY city snap to them. Thanks to Korean label Daehan Electronics they are now widely available.

Moss Covered Technology - Southern Points (Hibernate)

Serene electronic ambient adventures from the excellently named Moss Covered Technology for Hibernate Recordings. Hear the vines wrapping themselves around empty buildings, green shoots sprouting wherever they feel & the animal kingdom harmoniously repopulating it's surroundings as the earth keeps turning & the traces of a once proud civilisation fade away.

Slow Music Recommendation Round Up - 4/5/2019

Welcome to our weekly RSS feed friendly round up of this week's daily music recommendations, just in case you are reducing screen time or don't want to ride the dictatorial algorithmic rollercoasters on social media.

Our Native Daughters - Songs of Our Native Daughters (Smithsonian Folkways)

Occasionally an LP comes along with lyrics so deep that it makes you question the banality & superficiality of most other music. Our Native Daughters - consisting of four black, female banjo players & consequently standing at the intersection of racism & sexism is one of those albums. Don't be deterred by the weighty subject matter as this is an LP that is an inspirational, head lifting, shoulder straightening, smile between the tears, joy. Well done to Smithsonian Folkways Recordings for facilitating this project.

Kalaha - Mandala

Get your Friday freak on with Kalaha - one of the best global electronic fusion projects around. Up to the minute production perfectly unites East, West, North & South in a feel good, smiles & air miles, hip shaker of an LP.

The RSPB - Let Nature Sing

The most beautiful, unique, meaningful, important, thought provoking lyrics in the history of the UK music charts. Support not just the birds but the planet - everything else is just noise. Good work by the RSPB

Blair French - Patio Pastels (NuNorthern Soul)

Another excellent Balearic balmer from NuNorthern Soul as the ever reliable Blair French mixes a myriad of summer suitable sounds, both live & electronic, into one of this years best sunset soundtracks.

Nejrup - Manda (Creak Inc.)

A great debut release from Copenhagen's Nejrup for Creak Inc. as he lays down some of the nicest, live played, spirit lifting, spaced out, cosmic nu-jazz vibes I've heard in a while.

Various Artists - Splixtape (Hypnic Jerk Tapes)

A fine eclectic compilation from Hypnic Jerk highlighting the psychedelic underground with the acid folk of Prana Crafter, the mellow starting decent into noise of ragenap, guitar led ambient adventures from Tarotplane & a hypnotic mellow Kosmische flourish from Horse Apples.

Maria Beraldo - Cavala (RISCO)

The West's tendency to only countenance more traditional foreign language releases is a shame & means most people will miss out on Brazil's Maria Beraldo & this talented composer & multi-instrumentalist's, multi-faceted, minimally arranged experimental pop oozing equal parts sweetness, drama, inventiveness & attitude for RISCO.

MARCUS FISHCHER + BURKE JAM - VANITAS (DRAGONS EYE RECORDINGS)

Sunday suitable, devil in the detail, ambient listening from Marcus Fischer & Burke Jam for Dragon's Eye Recordings. Drones & sonic minutia slowly come & gently go until after 50 minutes everything stops, allowing other sounds to have their moment.
