Finish saxophone and clarinet player, composer, producer and keen collaborator Tapani Rinne has long been a favourite here at TSMM HQ. He's got a great line in horizontally inclined atmospheric jazz, outsider inclinations and not to mention a fondness for giving club nights a jazz infusion with his Rinneradio project. I particularly loved this collaboration with Juha Mäki-Patola on the ever great Hush Hush Records.
Lauri Heiskanen on the other hand is new to me, but I'm now following with interest. It appears he's another force for Finnish musical good, and as well as being a music producer and field recordist, is also a visual artist with a fondness for nature and, despite being a relative newcomer, his talents have already been picked up by all sorts of cultural events as well as theatre and dance producers in need of a soundtrack.
I'm surprised Rinne and Heiskanen haven't teamed up before, but I guess that's probably more to do with Heiskanen's late appearance on the Finnish music scene, they certainly play well together, and I hop we hear more of them together in the future
Both artists are in pleasingly horizontal form, with Heiskanen taking care of the machine processed ambient side of things, adding a distant aquatic vibe to the barely moving synth pads. Whether the field recordings come from under the water or has been processed to muffle the ebb and flo we shall perhaps never know, but when it sounds this relaxing does it even matter?
Tapani for his part kicks back in the studio armchair with his wind instruments on either side, closes his eyes and tunes into the earth's stillness - think snow covered forests far from any road, and lays down the sort of acoustic ambient soundtrack of my dreams. This could be ambient jazz's year, and if I finally do that jazzbient mix this tune will be on it.
