The cover for Selkie's "Gold" single, showing dried beige and gold flower petals scattered on a gray surface, lit by soft rainbow reflections and warm light.

Nice to see Selkie back in the blog, and back in Scotland I believe, after her Japanese adventures. If you need to get with the programme then check TSMM's review of her "Heartspeak" single from last year, and I highly recommend giving this accomplished singer, guitar player and producer a follow; she's got a vibe.

Black-and-white portrait of Kristina Cox aka Selkie, outdoors, one arm over her head and a finger near her lips, with potted plants behind her.

"Gold" is the third single to tease her debut EP, which has been pushed back until August, but which I'm sure will be well worth the wait, and it's another beautifully crafted, gravity-exempt slice of dreamy alternative singer-songwriter fare. Kicking off with the always welcome sounds of nature, the Gaian intro is soon lost to the sounds of a gentle guitar loop - the perfect bed for Selkie's rather apt tale of renewal. Some simple, lower-frequency synth pads then gently nudge the track into folky ambient pop territory and encourage Selkie to up the vocal intensity to match the patiently building electronic layers and vocal loops, all the way to the song's quietly intense finale. Nice. Only a few more weeks to go.
