Keen blog readers will already be aware of Suki Quasimodo - a multi-disciplinary Singaporean artist and graphic designer, who has been soaking up London's musical vibes for the last twelve years; the city undoubtedly providing a more understanding audience for her genre fluid, quietly experimental, future gazing music. New readers can get up to speed by checking her Datura 01 EP from 2024.

“POWER” gives us due notice that DATURA 02 will be dropping later this year, and I'm excited - it's a soulful ambient pop killer, that was created during an Asian trip across Japan, China and Singapore. The inspiration for the song comes from Nüshu, a phonetic ancient script used by ethnic Yao women for centuries to communicate sorrows, commiserate about the patriarchy and empower female community; a construct which blew me away.
The star of the show is Quasimodo's voice and the "you hold all the power" vocal refrain, under which she wisely she adopts a less is more production approach that floats the empowering message to top spot in your consciousness, but those with nice headphones or speakers will enjoy sinking into the cultured, patiently evolving, ambient - eventually beat and bass anchored arrangement, and even the distant sounds of our feathered friends that were captured when the studio windows were open.
Bring on the EP, but in the meantime check this extended video version of the track, or head to your streaming service for the single version.
