The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Singles & EPs Roundup - October 7, 2021

OK EG - INTERTIDAL ZONE (WAX'O PARADISO)

In a land far, far away there is a place where the Balearic spirit flourishes, a land of slow motion house that cradles nicely stoned heads that are looking out to sea as the sun dissolves into the ocean serenaded by the sounds of OK EG.

Common Holly - Preoccupy / The Moon (Barsuk)

I haven't taken a deep dive into the Hollyverse as yet but was immediately struck by this deceptively sweet voice from Montreal that glazes pleasingly edgy, melodic leftfield pop and freaky urban folk forms and which never seem too far away from unexpected untuned twists or deviant sonic turns.

Elijah Minnelli - SLATS (Breadminster County Council)

More fine tropical dub mutations from Eljiha Minnelli whose productions seems to be getting more instrument laden, this being the most musical so far. One for the late night toking ranchero dreads and big system seƱoritas.

Ernest Ranglin - In The Rain (Emotional Rescue)

On a reggae roll, I've got to big up the reissue of Jamaica's all time guitar don Ernest Ranglin as he serenades a Blue Mountain downfall with a warmth that only comes when you know the sun will be shining again very soon.

Ko Shin Moon - Miniature I (Self Release)

This is a lovely Franco-Indo-Electro-Organic fusion from two French musical voyagers who have united their Indian folk instrument and vintage synth collections to create these exotic hip shakers which will have you smiling and throwing all sorts of odd shapes around the living room.

Cousin Kula - BabyBack (Rhythm Section)

This is a super promising single from Cousin Kula whose longer release is hopefully not too far off. Here they turn the tempo down to 1 and turn up the languid soulful psychedelic pop to 11 in this ode to affairs of the broken heart.

Luke Duffy - Don't Forget Me (Self Release)

A fine and perfectly balanced fusion of pump organ and electronics in this neoclassical EP from Duffy who manages to make the old sound new and the new sound traditionally classical, with a sombre beauty that imbues so much Arctic hugging music, probably due to living life under a cloud.

Alejandro Mosso - 008 (Mosso)

I came across Mosso when he started producing more sofa friendly binaural beats, but now the clubs have opened again he's back to his old deeper house ways, whilst keeping (a rare for Berlin), softer hipnotic vibe. House for the head heart as well as the hips.

Nala Sinephro - Live at Real World Studios (Self Release)

If you've been vibing off 1.8 - perhaps my jazz album of the year, then I suggest you take a deep dive into this slow building spiritual slice of cosmic jazz that lit the way and tipped many of us off to this extraordinary talent. Alice Coltrane & her jazz spirit ensemble in the sky must be looking down and smiling, knowing their legacy is in safe hands.
