The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Singles & EPs Round Up - May 19th, 2021

Greg Dallas - The Storm (Bandcamp Self Release)

Vertical Divider
I love it when a new artist with a genuinely fresh sound jumps on my radar & Dallas has effortlessly managed to fuse acid folk, dream pop, jazz and noise,  enlisted the vocal light of Catey Esler to make sure  it's clearly visible, popped it in a gilted electronic frame for good measure and recently hung it for the world to admire. Make sure you follow this dude.

Yaya Bey  - The Things I can't Take With Me (Big Dada)

I have to admit, even as an old soul boy, I tend to ignore most nu-soul endeavour these days, so little of it seems to satisfy, but occassionally an artist comes along who demands my attention just a few seconds after hitting play. Yaya Bey is one of those.

Winston neale - Sinnerman (Warm)

Vertical Divider
The Warm crew continue their fine run of form by resurrecting this vintage slice of laid back, rootsy gospel soul for the modern world to admire. Flip the record to check a couple of fine electronic dubs from Quiet Village for the electronic heathens.

Deniz Cuylan - No Such Thing As Free Will (Hush Hush)

Funnily I've been coming across a few articles on the concept of free will, or the apparent lack of recently so I was quite amused when an EP cropped up with the same philosophical argument as it's title. Luckily it's on the ever interesting Hush Hush records and is a wonderful slice of dreamy minimal guitar & a suitably genre ambiguous soundtrack with which to contemplate this most mindblowing of discussions.

Morimoto Naoki - Prism (Bandcamp Self Release)

Vertical Divider
Ambient music is one of the few genres from Japan that crops up regularly on my radar and I'm still mystified why after decades of exporting all sorts of goods to the world their music largely remains so hidden from Western ears. Anyway it's a wonderful slice of gently hissing electroacoustic ambient to help you while away life's quieter moments.

Scott Orr - Know U (Other Songs)

Nice to hear Orr firing off an early warning shot to signal a longer release later this year I presume, and if the rest of the recordings are as gentle, blue eyed soul rich and thoughtful  as this then I urge him to damn well hurry up and release the rest of them. Please.

Nuron - La Source 02 (Bandcamp Self Release)

Vertical Divider
As you would expect from The Slow Music Movement only the deepest, dreamiest techno transmissions get a recommend and I have no hesitation in urging you to jump into your earthly escape pod and launch into the lush, gravity free, deep space realms of this weightless three tracker from Nuron

Marjorine - Salton Sea (Bandcamp Self Release)

Making a lot of noise for one man, Marjorine's debut single is certainly an attention grabbing slice of  shoegazing Krautrock meets psychedelic indie from the good old days. Now for that tricky sophomore single, though somehow I think he might just nail that as well.
Vertical Divider

DOMUS, DAG ROSENQVIST - TRANSIT/SUNRISE (ASTRONAUT)

Vertical Divider
Post rocking, Krautrocking, gentle and mental, quiet and shouty, hypnotic and headbanging. These two tracks from Domus & Dag Roaenqvist, who certainly seem to bring out the best in each other is quite a ride. Just hold tight for the finale.
