Singles & EPs Round Up - June 16th, 2020

Jon Brooks - How To Get To Spring (Cafe Kaput)

Vertical Divider
New Jon Brooks releases are always worth checking out, usually for his consummate modular synthesizer work and warm analogue electronic textures. Here he decided to pop out a more pastoral, folktronic offering that is hitting my summer sweet spot.

saphileaum - In Distant Terra (Bandcamp)

A great EP of earthly percussion in a world of deep space synthesizer work and slow motion, zero gravity house from Saphileaum.

Lena Platonos - Red Axes Remixes (Dark Entries)

Vertical Divider
A good remix usually requires good source material, so Red Axes had a head start working with 80's synth pop & unwitting Greek division of the Balearic mafia, Lena Platonos. Here they smooth out the early electronic rawness whilst retaining the 80's Mediterranean, experimental pop edges.

Charles petersohn - Truth Shall Never Be Covered By Lies (Bandcamp)

Sampling some wise words from a young Mariam Mekeba, Charles Petersohn, translates his thoughts on the recent global protests and demands for long overdue racial equality into this lovely, reflective, drifting, classic chillout number.

Lady Blackbird - blackbird (Foundation Music)

Vertical Divider
Lady Blackbird would have been holding her head high and been right at home with the twentieth century's female vocal jazz greats. Fortunately we're blessed that she lives in Los Angeles in 2020 so we can experience her in her prime. Can't wait for the album.

Apta - Sun (Bandcamp)

This is a wonderful, chirpy electronica EP with a real clarity of vision and execution from Apta. It's hard to believe it came out of grey old Manchester or perhaps the need to synthesize the sun under those cloudy skies is why it exists? Whatever, go press play and brighten up your day.
Vertical Divider

Mason Bee - Wela/sunu (Pollen Kit)

Vertical Divider
Perhaps better known for slaying dance floors & rewiring neural pathways with Plaid, Mason Bee takes a break from the night shift, dusts off the guitar and regales us with some daytime, summer suitable ambient folk. You'll have to ask him how he feels about being described as pleasant these days.

Murmurate - Phambili (Bandcamp)

Through the power of Reddit (yes, feel the force), Murmurate arrive in my humble blog by marrying the wonderful vocals of South Africa's Sisanda Myataza with floating, finessed new African noodling courtesy of outernational Brits, Josh Doughty and Jasper Trim. Hopefully there's more to come.
Vertical Divider

Aldorande - summer Body (Favourite)

Vertical Divider
Smooth, summery jazz funk fun with a lively BBQ bump, from France's Favourite Records. Charles Maurice drops a couple of cultured, extra bumpy dubs for when the sausages run out and the socially distanced dancing begins.
