The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Singles & EPs Round Up - february 4th, 2023

El Morabba3 - El Wuhoosh | المربع - الوحوش (Alt Orient)

Vertical Divider
I'm always really curious about music from the Arab world as it doesn't cross my radar enough, and I love the evocative vocals & instruments native to the region. Here the instruments are ditched in favour for some up to the minute electronic production but the haunting vocals give the game away and as for that video - what a trip! Cutting edge audio visual work from Jordan's - now Berlin's, El Morabba3.
You can find this adding a bit of attitude to the Slow Pop Playlist

Jack Prest - Residue (Art As Catharsis)

I do love a bit of twisted neoclassical music that flips the bird to the rigidity and conformity (power & grandeur aside) of its origins, and Jack Prest has dragged his chamber music playing collaborators backwards through his warped electronic cave to fine genre warping effect, in this edgy, haunting yet beautiful slice of sound art.
Find him propping up the Slow Neoclassical Playlist bar.

Victoria Wijeratne - Graces & Muses (Dragon's Eye)

Vertical Divider
Having previously worked more in TV & Film there's no denying Wijeratne's quality credentials. Here she steps out of the cinematic shadows into streaming's brighter lights with a new EP that twists & turns it's way through neoclassical, cinematic, spoken word & ambient pop worlds effortlessly, gracefully & with stunning attention to sonic detail.
Find her hanging with Jack Prest in the Slow Neoclassical Playlist.

Freya Lily - Loop Hands (Self Release)

I do love a genre ambiguous track that I struggle and inevitably fail to describe. The new track from Freya Lily intrigued me even more as it was developed due to an overwhelming response from a snippet of it's making she posted on Tik Tok - how modern is that? I reckon it's possibly minimal but for the sake of argument you can currently find it confusing people & waiting for the Tik Tokkers to find it in the Ambient House Playlist.

Noayama feat. Coppe - Majexty (Affine)

I'm not sure how many of today's streaming deficit disorder generation will make it past the song's weirdy intro, but if they do then they'll be rewarded by some trip hop indebted idiosyncratic pop of the smokey Berlin backroom venue variety, coupled with a pleasingly wayward, eminently suitable video from the up and coming multi-disciplinary Noayama, who is showing potential. Check him out complaining about how normal the other tracks around him sound in Slow Pop playlist.
