The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Recent Singles & EPs Roundup - June 7th, 2020

Kingsley Ibeneche - My Freedom (Astro Nautico)

Vertical Divider
A great slice of immediately distinctive nu soul with a futuristic twist, jazz lick and a bit of bump from Kingsley Ibeneche for Astro Nautico. It will be interesting to hear what comes next.

Francis M. Gri - Home Diaries 015 (Whitelabrecs)

It's always worth keeping an eye on Francis M. Gri (not least his forthcoming release on The Slow Music Movement!), he really is such a consistently good electro-acoustic ambient artist. Here he has produced a wonderfully gentle recording, & possibly the stand out release in the Isolation documenting, Home Diaries series for Whitelabrecs.

Lucky Brown & The S.G.'s - Pecan Trees Speak To Each Other (Tramp)

Vertical Divider
Lucky Brown is not only keeping the funk alive, he's keeping it real, which can't be said for most modern practitioners. Check out a couple of dirty grooves and, my favourite, the jazzier title track, for the ever consistent Tramp Recordings.

Daniel Aged - Bass Improvisations (Bandcamp)

I'd be hard pressed to come up with a less enticing EP name than this. Luckily for those brave enough to press play they'll find a wondeful ambient electro acoustic work created by one man and his (yes you guessed it) bass, not to mention his synth & acoustic guitar.

Time Cow & RTKal - Elephant Man (Equiknoxx)

Vertical Divider
It's always nice to check something experimental and daring in today's world of largely disposable, money hungry reggae. Here Time Cow & RTKal pay their respects to one of the Island's modern day royalty, over a stripped back to the bones, futuristic synth riddim. Now we just need a zero gravity dance to accompany it.

Nick Jonah Davis - Placebound Spirits (Bandcamp)

More lockdown music, this time from the Midlands in the UK - the forgotten region in the country's North/South divide. Here Davis fuses his folk guitar work with rural field recordings and some occasionally wobbly & wayward processing.
Vertical Divider

Double Geography - Elephants Ear (Invisible Inc.)

Vertical Divider
Apparently these two tracks from Double Geography didn't make their forthcoming LP on Invisible Inc. which bodes well for the July release. If you need some electro-Balearic with attitude then look no further, especially as the proceeds are going to anti racist & Covid support charities.

The Kaitain Slip - Impro (Bancamp)

Skip the rather twee piano opener and plunge into the deep space ambient joys of the rest of the EP as, without moving, The Kaitain Slip escapes his isolation enforced studio by closing his eys &  setting the sonic Sat Nav for distant stars.
Vertical Divider

Kouji Nagahashi - Spirit In The Dark (Bandcamp)

A great debut release from Japan's Kouji Nagahasi as he lays down some fresh beats with a slightly uneasy, jazz tinged, cine noir edge. When you're starting out it takes a while to find your voice, rather than ride the soundwaves of others but there's something promising about this chap.
