The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

PJS - MALAHAT (梅レコード, or Umé Records)

WHAT YOUR EARS SAY & THE COVER LOOKS LIKE

WHAT WE SAY

The PJS are a Canadian loooooong form ambient duo, so no 3 minute catchy pop songs here, just two tracks and fifty minutes of soothing sonic immersion for Japan's 梅レコード/Umé Records, with the first side having a lighter New Age pulse that eases you into the weightier, exploratory deep space journey that awaits on the flip side.

What The Release Notes Say

~

Our society is now a society of productivity. But to understand productivity, measurement is necessary. In order to create things for the lowest possible cost we have embraced productivity and made measurement central to our society.

This activity has raised the standard of living worldwide. This is undoubtedly a good thing. However, productivity and measurement - these are not a philosophy for life.

Our society is now a high-speed society. In work, leisure, and even romance, our lives are being turned in to data and measured. And as such we begin to move faster and faster in the name of productivity and efficiency. Perhaps we can even say that the working of our minds is being sped up.

Through this phenomenon, our experience of time and space is distorted. In the endless flow of tasks we have no time for reflection. In such a condition, free time becomes wasted time. Contemplation cannot be measured, and thus is not productive. It is not efficient. If one accepts this way of thinking, then speeding oneself up is the only option.

However, appreciating the beauty of nature, loving someone, understanding oneself deeply - these are not measurable experiences. We cannot increase their efficiency. The essential experiences of life require time. Not productive time, but living time.

Umé Records presents the album "Malahat" by PJS, who reside on Lekwungen and Cowichan Tribes unceded territory on the West coast of "Canada".
