The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Part Timer - INteriority Complex (Self Release)

What Your Ears Say & The Cover Looks Like

What We SAy

Wearing the unfortunate reality for most musicians as an artist name - Part Timer, John McCaffrey manages to balance his family & bill paying responsibilities with his creative urges to express the human condition through music in fine, contemplation encouraging, electronically infused, stately neoclassical & minimally inclined multi-instrumental ways.

What The Release Notes Say

'Interiority Complex' is something of a reflective album for me. I recently realised that it has been 16 years since the first part timer album came out. It feels like longer....but I suppose that's a couple of years of lockdowns for you.

I have a feeling that this album represents a broadening of the 'part timer' sound. It still has the long-standing interest in nostalgia-soaked recordings - vinyl crackle, tape hiss, field recordings. It is still largely composed of the instrumental elements found on my earliest stuff - guitar, strings, piano. But despite these familiar elements, this one is different. It feels structurally different and the moods sit a little more off-kilter than my previous releases. Maybe that's a function of a maturing in my approach, maybe it's a function of learning a new DAW, or maybe it's a function of, now more than ever, truly being a part timer in music making - snatching time between family, work, commitments, and all the other distractions life has to offer.

I'd love to say that this album has a grand overarching theme - a vision of sorts - but really, the title sums it up. It's a series of snapshots of what's in my head. An exploration of the various interests and sounds that I've taken on board in the time since that first part timer album 16 years ago.

*I've included a PDF "booklet" with the download featuring some lovely AI artwork created for the album*
