The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

WHAT WE SAY:

At the intersection of music, rainforests & dreams is sonic shaman Jon Keliehor. Let his guiding spirit & indigenous instruments guide you through this otherworldly, barely explored symbiosis. It's a magical place.

WHAT THE RELEASE NOTES SAY:

“Return to the Time of Dreams” is the third and final instalment in the World of Dreaming series*, a project that has focused on music, rainforests and dreams.

For many of us, dreams are oftentimes wondrous . . . elusive fragments that we have little control over. Events in dreams suddenly appear and disappear . . . space and time become vaporous, permeable. Magic moments quickly vanish into thin air and yet this can also describe experiences we have when we dance or play music.

There seems to be some kind of harmonic network that connects music, mind, matter, dreams and nature. Entangled in body and imagination, perhaps only our memory holds these things together. There are several stories here . . . call them Fables if you wish . . .

The first is about a particular collection of musical instruments, all of whom were created from materials in rainforest environments. Their sounds and sensations seem primal, yet when immersed in nature’s elemental soundscapes they happily transform reality.

Throughout all three albums the goal has been to create a different way to look at both nature and music. If we add dreams to this mixture, a sense of the surreal emerges and we might find ourselves involved with nature in ways we didn’t expect.

Keliehor: “My personal collection of instruments are children of the forests. Perhaps we all are. More importantly they know and understand nature’s environments. I think of them as explorers who have decided to return to their homeland, renew relationships there, observe its environments and help us understand nature better.”

*Part one and two: “The Beginning of Time” (2016), and “Fables of Forests and Light” (2019), were released both by InvisibleInc.co.uk and Luminousmusics.co.uk (Glasgow)
