The Slow Music Movement Blog

Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but strongly advise you just hit play and make up your own mind.
There's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find these recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Hot New Singles & Cool Artists from The Independent underground - August 15th, 2023

Blanco White - Silver Beaches (Nettwerk)

Vertical Divider
Blanco White has a voice with a touch of the Mark Hollis - an immediate win, & wisely the minimal strings & production stay well back in the mix so as not to distract from it. When the flamenco guitar does part the emotive vocals & shines through it cements the song's undoubted Balearic credentials, & if there is any justice it should serenade the sunset a few times on Ibiza before the summer is out.
Find the track well at home in the Slow Balearic  Playlist.

Sarah Lake - To Alabama (Self Release)

For years I've been drawn to more acid/alt-folk tales but I'm currently finding a joy in more MOR Americana & Indie Folk sounds. Sarah Lake's "To Alabama" offers no sonic surprises, until she opens her mouth that is, & once you hear it I'm pretty sure you'll be as smitten as I am by her deep, deep blue eyed soulful tones & seductive southern lilt.
Find her putting many in the Slow Indie-Folk list to shame.

Silverlux - Threeforms (Self Release)

Vertical Divider
Classic chill out vibes ooze from every pore of the new Silverlux single. The fusion of breezy bossa guitar melting into the  sustained organ tones, as all sorts of subtle psychedelic synths swoosh around the soundscape & orchestral strings pop in to add some class, is so well judged it deserves some attention.
Find this also right at home in the Slow Balearic Playlist.

David Johnson Kim - Flowers (DJKim)

It looks like David Johnson Kim has just dumped a couple of years worth of eclectic studio work onto Spotify, but the easy like Sunday morning groove, vocoder voice tickled, warm laid back keys & star gazing cosmic synths of "Flowers" shone brightest & is a fine addition to the Slow Balearic Playlist.

Naomi Elisa - Echoes (Cloudy Sky)

Vertical Divider
Naomi Elisa's vocal fragility puts you in constant fear of the song shattering into a million pieces, but it also gives her a pleasingly distinctive sound which makes this track stand out from the copycats. Luckily she is well anchored by some some simple but well constructed beats & serious bass weight on this fine slice of stripped back alt-pop.
Find her currently in the Slow Pop Playlist.
