The Slow Music Movement Blog

Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but strongly advise you just hit play and make up your own mind.
There's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find these recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Fog Net - Headlands (Bathysphere)

What Your Ears Say & The Cover Looks Like

What We Say

It was nice to discover new kids on the ambient block Bathysphere Records this week, and it seems they've hit the ground running, with this their fifth release in as many months. So if you want a gently winding, far-reaching journey through the ambient electronic condition, that will sound great soundtracking all sorts of Sunday inactivity then look no further than the new Fog Net LP.

What The RElease Notes Say

For over a decade, the duo of Justin Longerbeam and Niko Ramsdell have been creating captivating music that transports their listeners to another world. Justin(co-founder of Bathysphere Records), an audio-engineer and producer based in Los Angeles, CA , and Niko, an experimental musician and alchemist living in Albion, CA, came together in the beginning of 2023 and united as the ambient entity, Fog Net. The duo’s first album as Fog Net, 'Headlands', is filled with dreamlike textures, engaging cinematic soundscapes, and an atmosphere of serenity.

from Fog Net
‘Headlands’ happened to us. Recorded in Niko’s home studio over the course of three consecutive days, the album's tracklist is the order in which we performed and captured them.

We began each piece with improvisation, usually performed to field recordings Niko had made in the region surrounding the studio. Overlapping sequences, limitations, & strategies carried us through. There was not much lingering or deliberating while trying to find the essence of each piece as it happened, nothing more or less. If Fog Net captures the ephemeral from the air, 'Headlands' is the first distillate.
