The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Devin Hoff - Voices From The Empty Moor (Songs of Anne Briggs) [Kill rock stars]

WHAT YOUR EARS SAY & THE COVER LOOKS LIKE

WHAT WE SAY

So folk continues its people powered journey through the centuries in stunning folk fusion fashion as bass player Devin Hoff pays tribute to the 60s folk sounds of musicologist & revivalist Anne Briggs, on this free wheeling plucked, bowed & jazzed gem aided by a genuine dream team of collaborators for Washington's Kill Rock Stars.

WHAT THE RELEASE NOTES SAY

Voices From the Empty Moor seeks to honor the mystery and beauty of Anne Briggs’ music while maintaining its own unique perspective, foregrounding powerful emotion and, hopefully, magical transformation.

Bassist, composer and arranger devin hoff has been intensively studying the music of Anne Briggs for over a decade. Briggs was a leading light of the 1960’s English folk scene, a gifted songwriter and improvisor, as well as an amateur musicologist who revived traditional English, Scottish, and Irish Traveler songs with an unpretentious approach that perhaps presaged the rebellion of punk as much as it honored tradition.

The arrangements here include collaborations with musician friends that share a fascination with mining specific folk forms for universal and timeless truths; singers Julia Holter, Shannon Lay, Sharon Van Etten and Emmett Kelly; oud player Alejandro Farha; saxophonist Howard Wiley and drummer Jim White.
