The Slow Music Movement Blog

Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but strongly advise you just hit play and make up your own mind.
There's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find these recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Cool New Singles & Hot New Artists from the Independent Artist Underground - July 16th, 2023

fur Trade - Signature Moves (Light Organ)

Vertical Divider
I'm loving this microdosed slice of lightly funkified, blue eyed soulful, oddball pop from Fur Trade. It's vintage production nods & playing are somehow made new, whole & 2023 ready, & its catchiness creeps up on you - sending you searching for a ladder so you can join them dancing on the roof.
Find it quirking up the Slow Pop Playlist.

Bowes Road Band - Back in the HCA (Jakarta/Unoloop)

There's so much exciting new music coming out that my brain can't cope with digging into the past any more, but I was utterly charmed by this homemade psyche folk ultra-rarity, that is being reincarnated so more than 50 people can enjoy it's lo-fi appeal & good natured tones this time around.
Find it hanging out in the Slow Folk Playlist café.

Huw Marc Bennett - Red Valley radio edit (Albert's Favourites)

Vertical Divider
Regular blog followers will already know about Huw Marc Bennett, but his eclectic ways, currently being teased single by single prior to the LP release, are constantly surprising. This new single boldly covers Saharan and further East African vibes, ties them together with a subtle folk thread & then adds a dash of purple haze for good measure.
Find him in the Slow World Playlist - this time!

Ladaniva - Je Voulais (Jiguli)

There's been a lot of thought gone into this deceptively simple tune from Ladaniva, with its slow skanking Balkan riddim, wide cast mestizo influences, the hard to ignore sweet vocals & impish cheek of singer Baghdasaryan, coupled with some succinct but compelling horns.
Find the song right at home in the Slow World Playlist.

Lee Hannah - Paradise Gardens (Healthy Tapes)

Vertical Divider
Lee Hanna has been churning out some fine Japanese environmental nodding New Age music for a while now, with 2022's Mirror Reflection in particular hitting the TSMM sweet spot. Well he's just dropped this positive energy radiating new single from a forthcoming longer release and if you need a smiling, good natured sonic guide to usher you to a calm place then look no further.
Find it nestled in the The New Age of New Age Playlist.

Spirograph - Fireflies (Araña Discoteca)

I could have picked any number of tracks to highlight from the new Spirograph LP. It has a raft of consummately crafted classic synth sounds that have been painstakingly intertwined & is perhaps only 3 of 4 tracks to long - an achievement all by itself. So enjoy Fireflies, then head to the LP to playlist your favourites & give him a follow, I'm sure there is more great music to come.
Check him out in the Ambient House Playlist.

Ben McElroy - Where We don't Go (Self Release)

Vertical Divider
If you haven't head of Ben McElroy yet then you're probably new to the blog, as he's released 2 LPs & a single via TSMM - check them out their great. Well he's flying solo with his new vinyl release, which unusually for him mostly eschews his trademark instrumental & experimental tendencies for vocals, easier accessibility & familiar tradition sounds, although the first single showcases both sides of this versatile, every interesting musician.
Unsurprisingly you can find him  in the Slow Folk Playlist.
