The Slow Music Movement Blog

Mostly we put our daily recommendations here for the blog readers among you, although occasionally we go longform.
Reading about music is a bit like looking at pictures of food - not nearly half as much fun as getting involved, so we scribble a brief intro to hopefully whet your appetite but you're better off just hitting play. Not very "slow" I know but there's a lot of music to check these days & hopefully you'll find the recommendations a handy filter.
Trust your ears, not opinions.

Alula Down - Postcards From Godley Moor SUMMER 2020 (BANDCAMP)

WHAT THE COVER LOOKS LIKE:

WHAT WE SAY:

As I'm involved in so much music discovery, it's always a pleasure when an artist comes along with an idiosyncratic sound, & even better when it's as listenable & enjoyable as this. Check out these adventures in far out folk music from Alula Down, as they blend found sounds & nods to tradition, with restrained improvisation & experiments in minimalism. Big up Burnt Paw's Bandcamp feed for the alert. Follow him if you want to keep tabs on the outer reaches of the UK folk scene, not to mention his own great music!

WHAT THE RELEASE NOTES SAY:

"The music we make has become place based, it happens here. Perhaps it could only happen here. It grows from connections, mistakes, intrusions, exploration. These are chance moments - the coincidence of a blackcap’s song amidst feedback sounds, a folk song as a helicopter passes, the rhythm of strings against a summer’s thunderstorm".

And as John Cage puts it, recordings of such chance moments are “… of no more value than a postcard”.

Postcards then. From Godley Moor. With Love.

The album will be released as digital download only accompanied by a strictly limited edition of 50 7”x5” art cards. The art cards will be posted out with the first 50 download orders.

The collection of 8 cards are a combination of original poetry, text and artwork printed on 100% recycled, uncoated 350gsm unbleached card. There are 50 sets of these cards, and when they're gone, they're gone.

Should you wish to burn off a copy of the album yourself* you can tuck it in amongst the postcards for safe keeping.

All profits from the sales will go to Global Greengrants (www.greengrants.org/who-we-are/) - supporting solutions for those whose lives are impacted by environmental harm and social injustice.

*streaming an album over the internet more than 27 times will likely use more energy than it takes to produce and manufacture a CD - www.bbc.com/future/article/20190207-why-streaming-music-may-be-bad-for-climate-change.

CreditsAll songs written / arranged by Mark Waters & Kate Gathercole.
Recorded and home mixed in the Radar Station.
Mastered by Ian Carter - many thanks Ian.
