Out On In are better known as bass player John Gutenberger and musician and producer Thom Monahan. Both from Los Angeles, they've got a fondness for late-night studio dwelling and live ambient improvisation. The result is a series of fine EPs and, a rare thing for ambient music, potentially a live show. I'm a bit late to the party, having only picked up on EP08, but I'm now watching from afar when I can.
Their latest transmission, yep, you guessed it, EP09, is another broad look at the lower-lit, possibly dystopian depending on your world view, ambient electronic music spectrum/void (delete as applicable), or in their words, "OUT ON IN is gestural more than song, a moment captured and left to stand on its own." The track that grabbed my attention was, predictably, I guess, the warmer, lower-gravity sounds of "The Beginning is Near" - the EP's parting shot, which has a more peaceful vibe, and a pleasingly resigned main synth refrain, that respectfully and without overstaying its welcome, renews its way through the sparse electronic landscape.
Personally I stop there, but the darker ambient-inclined should start at the start with the more agitated, restless, guitar feedback-infused sounds of, "Non-Entity", and the ominously percussive and gently menacing machine rumbles of "Anchorite". Roll on #10.
