The mystically entitled Monolith Ascension Collective are keeping a low profile for now, probably a wise move for any haze loving cultural entity in today's coup stricken, increasingly authoritarian America, but word on the street is that it's a lysergic disco project set up by psychonaut and bass player Alex Millet to explore the confluence of deep grooves, cosmic vibes and the psychedelic spirit.
The collective's debut single, "Holotape 801" has its roots in a four day studio improvisation when Millet invited fellow space cadets Wren Kennedy, Adam Borgione, Josh McAlearney, Ian Francis, Julianne Brough and Elowyn LaPointe for a four day studio improvisation with only the pizza and weed shop delivery guys allowed in or out. With phones left at the door and no place to go, the crew looked within to see out, and with movement restricted in the tight studio, resorted to conjuring up a deadly deep disco groove for exercise and to stop early onset atrophy.
The result is a patiently building tune built around an insistent groove that ushers you to the dance floor, whilst the initially spectral vocals and microdosed synths gradually make themselves whole, the voice tying into the groove with a wordless, sensual refrain whilst the synths aim for the stars and encourage reality escapism. If that wasn't enough, just when you're in the zone along comes a psyche-rocking guitar percussion breakdown to nudge those not already there over the edge into dancefloor and altered state ecstasy.
It's a mind melting fusion groove for the hips and the head, and we can only wonder what else they cooked up in those four days?
