Hopefully you're aware that Lawrence English & Stephen Vitiello have a new collaborative album in the pipeline, if not then check TSMM's review of the first single with Chris Abrahams from The Necks, where you can also get a bit of background on the duo.
The second single to tease the album is "With Brendan", a reference to Washington D.C.'s Brendan Canty, drummer with Fugazi no less, as well as The Rites of Spring and The Messthetics, and the lads, like all good hosts, sit back and let their honoured guest take the lead.
Kicking off in unhurried fashion Canty slowly, deliberately introduces the rest of his kit through a series of rolls that gradually expand to fill the time available. English and Vitiello get comfortable knowing there's inevitably more to come, content just to throw in some vintage sci-fi effects, wrapping an otherworldly vibe away around the percussion. Slowly, surely Canty increases the intensity to urge the Fourth World out of the shadows and the electronic augmentation recognises the ritualistic call to action. The sci-fi nods are displaced by increasingly agitated drones, creating a spiralling, self perpetuating ceremonial soundtrack to the dissolution of neoliberalism and capitalism's funeral pyre. Ambient punk is born and just at the right time.
