The cover for Immersion's Megafauna single, showing a black cat silhouette merged with a bare tree at sunset over a flowered field; IMMERSION MEGAFAUNA text at left.

Immersion are Colin Newman and Malka Spigel, who've remarkably been sharing their lives and musical ideas since the eighties, and who are showing no signs of slowing down. It seems like the secret to a long marriage is a shared love of psychedelic music in its ambient, kosmische, alt-pop and electronic forms. Who would have known? Someone needs to tell the Tinder generation to turn on and tune in.

Colin Newman and Malka Spigel aka Immersion, in sunglasses pose against a bright red tiled wall, wearing black shirts with MOOG SYNTHESIZER and SHO EGA text.

The lysergic love affair is showing no sign of slowing down either, with their latest single "Megafauna" charting a blurry course through the heart of kosmische and krautrock music. Kicking off with an easy motorik rhythm and a light, undulating synth growl, the cosmic scene is immediately set, and just as the hairs on your arm start to stand up, Spigel lets rip with a monstrous bassline to hasten the psychedelic process. We're off and out there.

The lads then do what they do best, intertwining low-end frequencies with synth and guitar-effected textures to hypnotic, consciousness-expanding ends. There's some pleasing dole cheque squat living late eighties attitude to the bassline, whilst Newman sets a rather more van-dwelling mushroom-picking course with his synths and guitar; reviving, if it ever went away, the golden age of kosmische, nodding to orbiting rather than soaring space rock, and despite injecting some subtle squeal, mostly appealing to the soundscape rather than sulphate lovers. It's a potent, timeless combination of attitude and altitude, coupled with a pleasingly oddball DIY video that invites you to hop on the bus too.
