Desert Petunia - Radicle (Self Release)

The Slow Music Movement

I wish I could tell you more about Desert Petunia, but they're another artist that likes to let the music do the talking, with just the mission statement, "preserve the beginner's mind" and scant release notes on this single. It's hard work being a blogger sometimes.

What I do know for sure though is that they've just released their first, two track single The opening track, "Maximal" lives up to its name and is a impressive feat of glitch enriched, IDM informed electronica that staggers between tempos, moods, 80's and futuristic vibes, with with just its impressive attention to sonic detail piecing the passages together.

Next up is "Underwater" my main track of interest due to its chilled nature, although I sure as hell appreciated the well honed craftsmanship on the opener. "Underwater" is constructed from, would you believe, underwater samples that were either abstract to begin with, or have been manipulated beyond almost all recognition to only subtly hint at their sub-aquatic origins. The vibe here is more focussed with a steady percussive pattern charting a steady course for the squelchy bass, soundscape minutia and the emotive synth line that propels the track from its submerged origins into more rarefied, electronic soul imbued, borderline cosmic territory.

There's some genuine craft here from this obviously experienced beginner, the single is a serious statement of intent and I'm intrigued to hear what happens next.
