The cover for yk (Hello1103)'s In The Hollow Room album, showing a dimly lit art gallery interior with framed drawings on dark walls, warm spotlights, wooden display tables, and a doorway in back.

yk, or Yukoko, is one half of visually minded electronic duo Hello1103, but has recently felt the creative urge to take a trip in an electroacoustic ambient direction; the resulting soundscapes a perfect accompaniment for her softly sung introspection.

Yukoko aka yk (Hello1103) in gray clothing sits on a platform in from of a wall of doors in a public space, playing a ukulele in a bright wooden hall, calm and reflective.

The album takes a meandering path through the ambient garden - both lyrical and instrumental. The album's opener, "Anemone" is actually a pretty classic sounding slice of acoustic, minimally minded, guitar-led singer-songwriter fare, where the artists bares her soul with some help from the close miking and intimate recording techniques. My album favourite, "Candlelight" is next - a perfect slice of atmospheric, field-recording infused ambient folk for those quieter, ideally pastoral moments.

And so the album continues, but expect some twists and turns along the way. "Petals Chatting" ups the intensity, albeit in an approachable manner via its shimmering layers, or, if that isn't enough, perhaps some metronomic sound design, stripped-back ambient-piano guided vocal sweetness, ASMR haunted graveyard at midnight soundtracks that spiral into occult fantasy, distorted tones meet industrial drones, or if you're still not satisfied, although you should be, check out the childlike playfulness of the album-closing, aptly titled "Goodnight"

It's a singular, pleasingly eclectic, ambient confessional, and an accomplished solo debut album from this Tokyo native.
