The cover for sameoldnewlook's part of you EP, showing an abstract image of a blue silhouette against a bright vertical light. The background is textured with brushstrokes, creating a dreamy, ethereal mood.

Sameoldnewlook is a blogger's worst nightmare - a shadowy producer lurking in the wilds of Scotland who, apart from a few Instagram photos, prefers to let his music do the talking rather than let it all hang out on social media and give me something to write about.

Scottish electronic music producer Sameoldnewlook, in a plaid shirt with face obscured by colorful brush strokes. Background is a blurred structure, creating an abstract, mysterious mood.

He's also just released his debut EP, and I have to say he's off to a great start. The EP kicks off with "beyond beyond", the intro's ambient electronic vibes and a rousing counter-cultural spoken word sample swiftly given a kick up the arse by a slow but sure house beat. It's not long before some deeply-soulful, sampled male vocals gradually come to the fore - floated in on various well-crafted, low-gravity spiralling synth sounds, but just in case that wasn't enough, the track then gets a subtle jazz horn injection, and if you're on a deeper dance floor, it's party on.

Slightly more classic, jazz-licked house vibes are next up on "part of you", and so are the nineties reminiscing spoken word samples, plus a rather more shy, but still soulful vocal - maybe from our man, maybe not? The track then takes its time - a tightly looped classic piano house refrain building the vibe before the keys are untethered at the same time as the uplifting, dream house doors are opened, and we're off again.

I like it when producers save the last track for something deep and different, and if you've been getting your ecstatic dance on to the first two tracks, you're in for a bit of a shock. Gently experimental, minimal synth tones scurry through the speakers, making for a slightly uneasy start before fading away to reveal a gentle piece of ambient piano haunted by some percussive found sounds and spectral vocals, but just as you're getting comfortable a quivering drone disturbs the peace, before being gamely beaten back by the ambient outro. It appears Sameoldnewlook can do it all and do it well, let's see where he goes next.
