Nate Smith is a drummer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and bandleader who has worked with a diverse roster of artists across the jazz and music world, and no stranger to TSMM's blog. DJ Harrison is Richmond based multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer with a serious work ethic. If you want a soul jazz meets hip hop wormhole then head over to his Bandcamp and I'll see you in a couple of days.
"Juke Joint" is the latest and last single to hit the air(internet) waves before the now eagerly awaited album, LIVE-ACTION drops on August 29th - tip, and once again he's called in an A-list collaborators to make the track sing, with Jermaine Holmes and his soul falsetto front and centre, his voice slipping over the D'angeloesque groove like silk garments on the skin
Smith for his part lays down a head snapping, jazz filled rhythm to propel Holmes' pretty woman tale through the speakers, as a subtly bumping jazz tinged bassline adds some low frequency warmth and rounds off the tight hip hop tempo groove. DJ Harrison lays down some subtle but vibe enhancing rhodes and Charlie Hunter chips in with some sweet guitar licks at all the right times. It's as good a slice of oh so nice nu-soul as you'll hear this year. Now for that album.
