I picked up on Cleveland's Mourning [A] BLKstar back in 2019 with their Reckoning release and was instantly smitten by their deep appreciation of twentieth century black music and their determination to funnel that soulful essence through an open minded, forward looking Afro-American filter into new forms fit for the twenty first century and beyond. They were a breath of fresh air then and show no signs of delighting less, or slowing down with a new LP scheduled for May 16th on Don Giovanni Records. They've come a long way in ten years.

For "Let 'em eat", their second album warning shot, they teamed up with New Jersey tripper/rapper (delete as applicable or choose both) Fatboi Shariff. The track kicks off with a tightly wound vocal loop, paving the way for some loose, laid back beats which usher the vocalists out of the shadows to proudly announce their achievements and star reaching mission statement whilst the trumpet and guitar add some spaghetti western meets rock opera drama to proceedings, like it's the most normal thing in the world, but hold tight for a full on lysergic, purgatorial sounding meltdown finale, graced by Shariff's far out and freaky vocal talents.
Whilst you're there, head straight over to the unhurried, bass heavy, hip hop indebted funktification of "Stop Lion 2" for another taste of what is sure to be quite the LP, and put May 16th in the diary.
