Monstro Horrível - Sequenze Minori (Self Release) [Electronic Music]

Vitor Salerno is a Brazilian who has found a home in the somewhat chillier - in many ways, land of Austria. He's also been busy making noirish, leftfield electronic music with a healthy dose of live instrumentation under the Monstro Horrível moniker for the last few years, and his latest album has just dropped.

Guitar and piano thread this largely machine created album, and it's the muffled and looped keys that get Sequenze Minori started, closely followed by some sporadic, gradually expanding percussion and some pleasantly wobbly synth sounds that suggest you're in for a bit of a trip. The machines then take control of "Não, Sim" - nagging synths scurrying around the minimal keys until the track eventually spirals into some sort of inter-dimensional portal. "The Vulnerable Mind" then takes us on a trip down nineties ambient memory lane with a spoken word sample floating wisely over the pulsing atmosphere, a vibe the neighbouring, "Libero" extends.

It appears our boy can also play the guitar, introducing the instrument in looped and more free flowing forms to accompany the piano strolling around the low lit ambient streets of "Avanti e Basta". So far so low gravity, but hold tight as low frequencies start to coalesce and suggest you should get a sub-woofer for your computer speakers, as the beats variously snap and thump into the listening space and the soundscapes are thrust, rather than floated through the speakers. But fear not chilled music fans the ambient void is re-entered for the album's second half as Salerno continues his journey through shadowy, flickering street lamp lit ambience, a place low on population but rich in atmosphere and cinematic noir charm.
