Milton Gulli - Ainda (Tangential Music) [Brazilian / Soul]

Milton Gulli has been around for a while: from Afrobeat infused pan-African vibes, modern urban flavours as well as classic hip hop tributes, soul infused nu-Brazilian beats and stoned MPB meets sweet samba. He's got skills, a vibe and a restless creative nature. To be honest I don't know much about Tayob J. - a young Lisbon based musician and producer who took care of the production, but on a cursory listen he's keeping it real as well, albeit with more of a focus on nu-soul and classic hip hop vibes. They're quite the pair, and as you're about to hear there is some serious synergy.

On "Ainda" Tayob supplies the drums, strings, Rhodes and sampling which frees up Gulli to do what he does best - add the guitar and inject some soulful vocals into the track. "Ainda" sees him in reflective mood, as he muses on affairs of the heart, and in this case the one that got away, and let's face it most of us have at least one of those.

Starting off with an easy groove and less is more approach, Gulli slips unhurriedly into the track with his understated, deeply soulful voice and acoustic guitar playing that is content to sit back and help elevate his tale. Slowly but surely Tayob tugs on the heart strings, first by allowing Gulli space to breathe, but then as the song unfolds with some graceful strings that initially melt into the song but gradually build, sweeping the emotions and THAT voice into the listening space in classic soul fashion; transporting us down memory lane to choices made, chains of events initiated - for better, worse or just different. But rather like Gulli,we're still standing, and life must goes on.
