Mali Obomsawin - Triage (Out of Your Head) [Jazz]
Mali Obomsawin is back in the blog with her latest single, and that can only bode well for October 16th's album for Out of Your Head records. If you want to check out the first single and learn a bit more about her, then head over to the review of Automatic.
Starting off with whispered wind, a faint electronic hum and distant vocal samples, probably laid down by Andew Broder on the decks, the atmosphere soon builds behind the reflective intro until Obomsawin's stand-up bass demands respect, dials down the background noise, ushers in the drums and invites her fellow jazz warriors: Allison Burk on clarinet, Taylor Ho Bynum playing cornet (and production), Zack O'Farrill's sticks, Magdalena Abrego holding down the guitar, Noah Campbell and Yuma Uesaka on saxophones and Adam O'Farrill's guiding trumpet to the front of the stage to make some righteous noise.
"Triage" implies cool heads and quick decisions under pressure, so Obomsawin quickly surveys the earth and its people's needs, correctly decides its all hands on deck, and free yet focussed, sayin' something and meaning it jazz is the only solution, and her tight and to-the-point team don't let her down. I'm now pretty sure the album is going to be great, but if everyone's on the tour bus then the live show is going to be explosive.
