The cover for Lindsey Troy and Deap Vally's "See You on the Other Side" single showing Troy in a navy sailor-style dress, hair whipping in the wind against a bright cloudy sky.

Lindsey Troy made her name with the swaggering rock and bluesy growl of her Deap Vally project who made quite an impact, and toured with some heavyweight, modern rock greats. All good things come to an end though, and she's now stepping out on her own with an altogether quieter and more personal, still blues-infused, folk-fluid sound, seemingly more suited to seated venues than stage diving.

Lindsey Troy in a peach lace top looks over her shoulder through a car window, with tree reflections and a moody blue background.

This is the fourth single teasing her new start, and I have to say she's hit the ground running. "I've Seen the Willow Trees" is a fine slice of indie folk meets alt-pop with a crowd-pleasing build; "Love is Deeper" a bluesy, acoustic folk number with a bit of light guitar growling - old habits die hard I guess; and "Six Shades of Grey" a heavier, late-night swampy slice of bluesy Americana - my favourite of the three.

Which leads us nicely to her latest offering - the stripped-back intimate folk of "See You on the Other Side", and perhaps the best showcase for her undoubted solo vocal talents so far. Instrumentation is gentle and sparse, and like the voice, closely miked - you can hear the rub of skin against string, and coupled with some impressive sound detailling - there's serious studio craft here; the perfect accompaniment to elevate her Americana-rooted soul-baring voice and tale of life's journey, that just as you think you've got a handle on it ends in a guitar-twanging slice of trip hop. Yep, she can do it all, as well as seemingly making that transition from well known double act to solo star look pretty easy.
