liminal elysium - ginseng (Self Release) [Ambient]

Musical taste comes with age and usually evolves over time, and whatever your path, early tuition - however traditional, will always come in handy, as classical-piano schooled Jan Delannoy has discovered as he first meandered through rock abrasiveness, then hazy, head-nodding trip hop and into his current ambient electronic phase.

"Ginseng", and in fact the Liminal Elysium EP that it is part of, sees Delannoy taking a refreshingly philosophical, "accidental approach" to music-making: modular synth surprises, coupled with samples and field recordings that were laid down in a single take with only some light sonic polishing and post-production being a deliberate act. The results are impressive.

The twinkling, space-inhabiting synth tones of "Ginseng" are my EP highlight. The sounds falling like the first drops of a welcome summer shower into a sonic void or on a gentle, intermittent ambient pulse; either way, it's a fine, glistening, pleasantly playful slice of ambient electronica that will do your soul some good. Make sure you check the rest of the EP though; "strungalong" evolves from a glitching electronic hum into good-natured, synth contemplation, "wailsong" explores ambient mysticism, and EP closer "forestcomfort" sees thoughtful machine noises commune with the local fauna.
