Lisa Conway aka L Con is a Swiss-Canadian composer, sound artist, songwriter, producer, and mix engineer who got a leg up from the dearly missed Red Bull Music Academy during its last hoorah back in 2018. Refreshingly hard to pin down, she flits between genres, mixing her fondness for forward-looking song craft with experimental sound design and everything in between. She also works behind the scenes on original music for film, documentaries, the arts and installations. Despite spending many a long hour in the studio with only machines, a computer and an ornamental fish for company, she also plays well with others, having formerly been a member of the similarly eclectic, similarly quality, now no more, Del Bel and The Owle Bird bands, as well as regularly dragging a few mates down to the studio to help out with her musical efforts.
A grounding issue gets things rolling, and after quickly reattaching the wire, Conway immediately jumps behind the mic and lets loose with a quivering, gently edgy synth line that acts as an unruly foil for her clear and true vocals. Fellow experimentally minded producer and sax player Karen Ng (tip), then pops by for a cuppa, luckily has her sax with her, and can't resist sparring with the machine noise, slipping in some trembling, subtle free jazz support for Conway's sweet tones. Electroacoustic adventures over, Nic Hyatt then sees this enlightened nu-vocal-jazz delight out with a poignant piano moment. This is Conway's first solo outing since her accomplished The Isolator album from 2023, and we can only hope it's paving the way for a long overdue follow-up, let's see.
