Kodomo - Constants & Changes, Rafael Anton Irisarri Rework (Foil Imprint) [Ambient]

Chris Child aka Kodomo is a restless, eclectic electronic producer and no stranger to TSMM's pages, as well as a composer for TV and video games - usually a sign of elevated craft. He released a top-drawer, stylistically meandering electronic album earlier this year on the always worth checking, artist-run FOIL Imprint, and now it's time for the remixes, the latest of which is from the wisely chosen Ibero-American composer, producer and mastering engineer Rafael Anton Irisarri, who has similarly wide-ranging electronic tastes and serious pedigree.

Hot on the heels of the bouncy, club-primed Lusine remix of "Light Rain", Irisarri has taken on the original album's title track, "Contants and Changes", which was a glistening, angelic voice and sparkling key-infused journey to the light at the end of life's tunnel, with UCC Harolo the celestial vocal guide. Well, Irisarri sees things somewhat differently.

The track starts with looped field recordings providing a percussive backdrop to the gradually building low-lit drone, which sounds more damp cave than pearly gates, and boy does that drone build. The voice is still there, just, but is quickly consumed by insistently layered, heavier drones, rumbling low-end frequencies and gloomier pads, that paint a more, if not ominous, then serious ambient picture, and which, at their peak, are quite the wall of ambient sound. But there is an end to even this tunnel; the layers' gravitas conveying work done, they start to quiver and gradually fall away near the final leg, allowing the now distant voice and cave soundtrack to be heard again, by which stage you know you will never see or hear them again.
