I AM SNOW ANGEL- Melancholy Hearts (Alta California / Push Start) [Ambient]

I AM SNOW ANGEL is better known as Julie Kathryn to her mum, although someone who is a songwriter, producer, sound designer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a soft spot for the 80s deserves a more dramatic title. If learning all those trades and putting them into regular action through her scoring and steady stream of releases wasn't enough, she also found time to co-found Female Frequency, a collective dedicated to empowering women in the music industry.

"Melancholy Hearts" is the standout track from her recent Original Motion Picture Score for the forthcoming feature film, The Unexpecteds. The score is unmistakably cinematic in nature consisting of mainly incidental music and shorter mood pieces under a minute long that need the visual context to really shine, so as odd as it seems I don't actually recommend the album for a start to finish home audio listen.

The exception though is "Melancholy Hearts". The third longest track on the album is a different kettle of fish that starts with a gentle drone that continues its mellow course even as some deep, synth emanating string notes gently wake the track up and pave the way for some gently quivering synths to elevate us from this mortal coil. After a brief lower gravity interlude the final passage repeats the process to finish lulling you into a state of deep introspection. It's a well crafted slice of contemplative ambient music that works with or without pretty pictures.
