I’m a bit late to the Frenk Dublin dub party, which is OK as he seems to be ageing like a fine wine. Starting out as a second generation dubstep producer in 2013 he’s been honing his dub chops whilst drifting over to the deeper, more dub techno side of the genre in recent years with a steady stream of top drawer EPs and LPs to his name.

The album opens up with Dublin’s take on the classic Rhythm and Sound template, and I can’t help thinking that Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have Tenor Youthman’s righteous vocal and Dublin’s deep, hypnotic riddim cranked up in their studios and are nodding approvingly. Next up is the dreader, head down dance floor ritualism of “The Root of All Evil” which should unite all low-lit backroom ravers. “Into the Void” injects some pre-roots reggae perkiness to lighten the dub techno gloom, highlighting Dublin’s deep appreciation of Jamaican musical history.
“Mystery Dub” repeats the old meets new fusion formula with technoid roots aplomb, whilst “The Resistor” sounds like a nod to Augustus Pablo, somewhat let down by its overly urgent tempo, Pablo was never in a hurry. “Quantum Dub” is as deep as a track with that title should be and “Night owl” should help keep the 3am party crew awake for a bit longer. If you’re surfing the dub continuum or are smitten by the sounds of dub techno then don’t delay.
