Ema Jean - Kiss the Sun (Self Release) [Folk]

Ema Jean is a nomadic, guitar playing Canadian singer songwriter, who made an appearance on the TSMM blog way back in 2019 (her memory is better than mine!), with the sweet soulful tones of, "Wish It Was Me", a sweet slice of lovers soul from her accomplished soulful vocal jazz debut, Room For Fascination. Her sophomore album, Emanuelle Kami saw her stretching out into genre fluid, more mainstream singer songwriter territory, whilst maintaining her high quality control standards. I don't know what happened at the time, but three years after its release she's finally bringing the album to some live venues and also releasing some new material that showcases her hitherto veiled folk roots.

Her new single, “Kiss the Sun" heralds her folk phase and you've got to wonder why she hasn't showcased it before? But I guess if you can do it all there's only so many hours in the day to showcase all your talents, and separating them by album makes sense.

Jean's finger picking sets a warm tone for this suitably stripped back ode to simplicity and slow days in love, and doesn't that sound just the ticket. She nails a gently hypnotic acoustic guitar refrain that floats her beautifully sung tale through the speakers, only pausing for an intimacy contemplating mid-song breakdown, before firing it up again to celebrate those unhurried, and by the sounds of it summery, hand holding and snuggly moments, and I can't wait to hear more of her folk regression in 2026.
