The cover for Dis Fig's What To Make Of These Mortal Hands album, showing a close-up of two dirty cupped hands reaching together against a dark background, gritty and tense mood.

I imagine New York's noise scene is an uncompromising stomping ground, but that's where Felicia Chen aka Dis Fig graduated from before heading to Berlin for finishing school, and I'm sure even the hard-to-please experimental Berlin heads are nodding with approval to her cutting yet crafted, Anthropocene-suited sonics, even when she juxtaposes some heartfelt vocals with the cultured cacophony; and judging from afar, it appears she has serious stage presence to back it up too.

Felicia Chen aka Dis Fig in a black hooded cloak crawls through dry grass at night, lit starkly against a dark background, eerie and tense.

Refreshingly/annoyingly (delete as applicable), she's taking her time between albums, and despite some tasty collaborations, it's been seven years since her debut shouted her arrival at the world. Thrill Jockey have picked up her sophomore, and the first dark, dense and unignorable smoke signal has just wafted over the hill.

Initially choosing to sit back behind her equipment and focus on some speaker-testing beats, bass and growling distortion, she lets curator and straight-talking poet, the wind between, have his say in his measured yet compelling style. Riddim locked, Chen then leans into the vocals, initially with an echo-soaked refrain before letting it all, and I mean all, hang out with her distinctive, denial-piercing vocals that cut through the machine noise to get to the heat of the matter. It's the deadliest duet of 2026 and bodes well for October's What To Make of These Mortal Hands album.
