Decorated Time - Aotearoa Ambience (Self Release)

The Slow Music Movement

Decorated Time is the independent solo project of NZ multi-instrumentalist Adam McDonald who is a jazz drummer, self taught guitar and bass player, sound engineer and now producer, who's currently dabbling with all sorts of genres.

His sound at the moment seems to be dived between downtempo lo-fi beats, mosh pit inducing indie rock and my point of interest, animistic ambient sounds. He first flirted with the genre with this great hour long field recording shedding light on the New Zealand tūī bird, as peaceful a nature sound recording as you'll find anywhere.

"Aotearoa Ambience" is a whole new level though. Real and effected field recordings play their part anchoring the recording to the land he calls home, as a haunting, mystical ambience from translucent drones - sound source unknown, floats through the recording like a mist in a suspense movie. The icing on the cake though is the Kapa Haka chant passed down generation to generation by the island's original natives, the ancient messages met by a response from the young of the land eager to learn their roots.

The tune is an evocative, ritualtistic ambient joy, a mystical soundscape where ancient wisdom is catapulted into the future and the youth are transported back in time. More please.
