Dapper Blob - (Music For) Museums (City of Animals) [Ambient]

Dapper Blob is the well-chosen alias of LA-based composer of music for visual media and keen collaborator Ben Schwarz-Hopkins, who has been producing music for video games and film for probably longer than he cares to remember. In between scoring projects, and as an antidote to depression and anxiety - something most of us can probably relate to today, he also squeezes in an impressive amount of ambient endeavour to help us through life's ups, downs and doom scrolling too.

His latest album, (Music For) Museums, is just that, gentle ambient seasoning to enhance the visual feasts that await you within your chosen institution's walls. It's also a fine trawl through the ambient condition, with a host of lighter-than-air delights alongside some slightly weightier productions, for your presumably headphone-clad art gazing.

The album starts in almost zero-gravity fashion with the wonder-enhancing "First One In", before the relatively pupil-dilating, quasi-classical follow-up "Atrium", seemingly produced with the local science museum in mind. It's then back down to my preferred lighter touch productions like "Sculpture Gardens", "Study of Light" and "Brush Works", with their intricate detailing and quiet appreciation that make you lean forward to explore their subtle depths, or perhaps just lean back and let the sounds wash over you. There's something here for everyone, as well as being a great ambient showcasing gateway for those curious about the genre.
