Calibro 35 - Jazz Carnival

Milan's Calibro 35 have been flying the retro groove flag via the city's Record Kicks label for around fifteen years now. Pleasingly suited and booted these boys have an impressive collaborative history, been sampled by Dr. Dre and played all over the world. They're on a mission to keep the golden age of twentieth century jazz, funk and soul alive, and they're not messing about.

For those that don't know "Jazz Carnival" was originally a stick of high octane jazz fusion dynamite to be found on Azymuth's Light as a Feather LP, it was also beloved of the UK's jazz dancers, and has caused its fair share of dancefloor mayhem, despite its nine and a half minute duration, only the fittest shufflers could keep up.

Calibro 35 tend towards the if it ain't broke don't fix it approach with their music, but still manage to give this classic a bit of a microdosed Milanese makeover. Keeping the original tempo and unrelenting 4/4 rhythm the quartet muddy the drum and bass frequencies to great scuzzy effect. They even bow to the demands of modern music by lopping four minutes off the original, so they get straight to the point with the organist and keyboard player launching straight into a cosmic jazz fusion frenzy - this is a tune for the heads and hips, it's also a fitting modern version of this 1979 classic tune, which incidentally came from an album that remarkably stayed in the UK's top twenty album chart for eight weeks straight, such was the jazz funk fever gripping England at the time.

I should also mention that this great jazz dancer is taken from the group's forthcoming Exploitation LP of cinematic jazz covers due out on June 6th - put the date in your diary.
