The cover for Bitplane's, "Peacock Fetus / クジャクの胎児" single, showing a vibrant butterfly with multicolored wings on a black background. Text reads "Butterfly Specimen." Symmetrical patterns and neon hues.

Bitplane is eschewing streaming and social media's bright lights, and with both mediums in late stage enshittification who can blame him? So, if you want to find out more, light a candle and enter the Bandcamp and Discord shadows.

His music adopts a similarly singular approach. He's got an obvious fondness for plundering what came before, and doesn't seem bothered about spending days of studio time polishing his creations, constantly exploring the latest plugins to keep up with the "in-crowd" or generally worrying what everyone else is doing; instead preferring to wander through music's history: whether opera, orchestral schmaltz, 80s soft rock or late twentieth century dance music, grab what he likes, then have fun reshaping and twisting it, and "Peacock Fetus/クジャクの" is a great case in point.

Things kick off with an early D&B/not D&B riddim to help get the party started. Early 90s style vocal samples are then chopped, looped and layered for mid-range interest and to add some voices of reason to the lysergic synths that seep through your ears, into your cerebral cortex, invoking mild hallucinations. Throw in some dramatic string samples at just the right moment and you've got a back to the future trip down cut and paste dance music memory lane, that puts the fun and the smiles back onto the dance floor.

Oh yeah, peep the video as well, it's perfect, less is more, mind melting visual seasoning and another reminder to free yourself from the streaming algorithms and explore the Bandcamp underground - good things are waiting there for those willing to make the effort.
